I disagree with how the forum Reputation system works.

I'm finally taking a stand against the way Reputation works here at LPF. Just because one person who has a bunch of reputation points and has been on the forum a while -Rep's you, it can easily negate the +Rep's of countless other members, reputable or not. On eBay, seller rating/reputation doesn't carry that kind of weight, and it works very well. Basically, a veteran's + or - reputation should not be worth hundreds of reps from newer users. I understand that changing the way something as serious as that works is no easy task, and C0ld already has more than enough tasks of far-greater importance to be focusing on, but I just felt like I should state my opinion and see if maybe anyone else agrees with me.

And yes, as you might already have noticed from my slightly agitated tone, I am mildly frustrated with a recent Rep deduction I have been given that has carried way (in my opinion) too much weight and, once again, more than negated a lot of previous positive reputation. I would like to ask ahead of time that I am not flamed with negative reputation for stating my opinion here, and if you disagree with it, please do share with me your reasoning by posting in the thread.

Here's to a pleasant upcoming discussion

The way I see it, it's just the internet.
Don't take it too seriously. You can't expect everyone to reason the same way you do.
Forum reputation carries no weight outside of the internet, so unless it is affecting your way of life or business, just take it in stride.

I do agree that +rep and -rep should be worth the same amount

http://laserpointerforums.com/f59/basics-rep-system-40221.html

When you +rep someone they get the full amount of your rep power

When you -rep someone they only loose half your rep power

Right now if I +rep someone they get 351 rep points.
If I -rep them they only loose 175 rep points

Are you sure that you want those to be equal?

In the old system, they lost the full 351 rep

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** -- Also you give and get rep points, NOT rep power. I have 30,492 rep points, but only 351 rep power. Would you like me to wield 30,492 rep power?

I agree with RA it's just the forum not real life so don't get too worked up about it. I didn't care for this system either when I first came here and seen all the neg reps being thrown around by just a few people. but I have settled in and it's realy not to bad, heck you could be living in a hut with no electricty :D

This system may not be the best but you cant make every point the same for every person.
aka noob or people above 100 post affect you the same as dave.
This would allow noobs to destroy vets that had to be hard on them or keep the piece or just noob accounts being used to neg rep people.
yes it hurts when you get a neg rep, but hey its the internet.

i do think this would not be easy, but to chose how much you want to deduct on points.
ie deduct the full points as you can or only half or quarter.
that way there are levels to it.
it might not have been bad enough to get my full 100 neg rep so i only neg rep him 25 just as a warning.

Thanks for clarifying that Dave, but I think people are misunderstanding what I am disagreeing with here.

It is the inequality from person to person that I think is unfair. Say I have a positive experience with, say, 30 people, all with 3 rep power. That is a LOT of people, and most of them are probably not total newcomers if they already have that much rep. Then say one of the Veterans disagrees with something I posted in a thread somewhere and he has 200 rep power.

All those 30 people would then be totally negated and I would even lose more rep on top of that, all for something I said. This results in an extremely unbalanced system, where people like me (and I'm not some newcomer) have virtually no power at all and veterans have the power to totally make-or-break someone's reputation. It would be ideal, in my opinion, for Veterans to obviously have more significant reputation giving-and-taking power than newcomers and non-veterans, but just not as drastically as it is now. So I don't think that everyone's +/- Rep weight should be the same, that would be pointless.

That is where I see the unbalance. Thanks for taking the time to read my opinions!

So, basically, you think that your opinion should carry just as much weigh as my opinion?

To be fair yes i do think that although i am a new comer some sort of system should be in place. Like new members rep is worth so much level1 is worth so much level 2 worth so much and up then the mods such as yourself be worth the most but still not as high as could be. Get it?

You appear to be confusing veteran status with high rep power. You do not get much rep power for being around a long time. You get it by being given it by others. There are veterans who have low rep (like turtlcannon 15rep) and non-veterans that have high rep (like Dr.Laser >150rep)

We will have to disagree here. You being here for less than a month with <100 posts do not know or understand the forum like someone like me who has been here for >2 years with >11K posts does.

You haven't posted enough... IMO... for me to know if you are and
upstanding... help any one... fair and loyal.. contributing Member
of this Forum... or a Drug addicted...child molesting Troll...

With time and more post everyone will see what type of member
you are and +Reps or -Reps will follow...

For you to have the same power to do harm or good as other
more highly posted members.... I don't agree with...
Rep powers need to be earned not given...

BTW.... weren't you banned....

Nah, your opinion doesn't mean anything anyways

Anyways, an idea I had would be to do it by Post-Count "class" combined with existing user Rep. You know, the little phrase above everyone's avatar that changes as ones post count grows? So 1-100 posts could have 1 rep, 100-250 posts could have, say, 2 rep, 250-500 posts could have 4 rep, 500-100 could have 6 rep, 1000-2500 could have 10 rep, and so forth. There would then be a similar system with how much rep someone has, and the two figures would add together. Well, the numbers weren't exact and were more of just an example figure to demonstrate what I'm talking about, but I think I've made my idea clear.

Glad to see this is making for a pleasant discussion, and not a flame-war where -Rep's fly like bullets from a machinegun to anyone and everyone who dares open their mouth to let an opinion out :p

Although i may be new to THIS forum i am not new to forums at all. See the reason no one will listen to me is because i'm new to this forum, and i'm not going to be respected in the same way and i understand that and i'm fine with that. At least think about some sort of fair system.
