hi all, as many of u probably heard of the recent earthquake in haiti, my fiancee's family had several deaths. i will be away for a few days spending time with her and her family and just wanted to give u all a heads up


i donated some to Direct Relief International

Condolences/thoughts/prayers

And for those wanting to help out, please give to well-known charities. Unfortunately, there are way too many people out there perfectly willing to take advantage of the generosity of others, even in a time like this. The Red Cross is of course a great one, Doctors Without Borders already has doctors in Haiti as well.

I can also vouch for Direct Relief International, as cold mentioned. They are actually local to me, they are located only about 2 miles away from my apartment. They certainly do a lot of great things, and they do things the right way. They are so good at what they do with getting contributions from medical supply companies, that every dollar you donate yields $38 in medical aid. Great charity.

My condolences and thoughts go out to you, your wife and her family and everyone else involved in this terrible disaster.
Please help by donating to well known charities! As PBD said, Direct Relief International are a good choice!

Sorry to hear your Fiancee's Family's misfortune.
The haitian people already have it ruff. It's one of the poorest countries in the world. This earthquake is going to have devastating long lasting effects, on it's people.

Just be aware of the orginization you donate to, lots of scams going on as of late.

I took some advice and donated to DRI (I was torn between the Red Cross and what ever else was the better)

Red cross work in low-cost so those people in help can get more.



Their airport is tiny, they can't handle so many planes with food. :(




Also, if you have some cash laying around. you can actually go there and build home... in a few /week/months when the situation will improve.

Use your cell phone to make a donation. When you text HAITI to 90999, a $10 charge will be billed to your cell phone as a donation to the American Red Cross.

Mail: Checks made payable to the American Red Cross benefiting the relief effort in Haiti should be mailed to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.

To Avery--my prayers to your family----FYI- I volunteer at a thrift shop that raises money for our local animal shelter--many times in the past week folks have come by wanting to donate clothing for Haiti--IMO I think they are feeling guilty for not helping but--bags of old clothes are not the answer-- it only makes a lot of work for the people who run such places while not really helping the Haitians out-- there are still bags of stuff like that leftover from Ike and Katrina--they need medicine, water and food not winter clothing or worse--- old worn out rags............ best way to help it to donate some cash to the site that cOld has provided.= a 10$ donation will go a lot further than a big bag of clothing .....even nice clothing--==HZ

It is really terrible, the infrastructure of the country doesn't help at all they, material to rescue is really old. Such a massive tragedy
