Is Auto Locking Old Threads Possible?

We've all seen it.

Usually in a Review, or For Sale thread.

A new member comes along, and 99% of the time posts something along the lines of;

Me too!

That's cool.

Thanks.

How did it work out?

Etc,.

Of course the thread is bumped, and every single person subscribed to it gets a notification. Sometimes this leads to a productive discussion.

More often though it just results in a bunch of people getting annoyed, and bumping the thread even more, telling the offending necroposter not to do.

Question - Is it possible to just have threads automatically lock if they have been inactive for over a year?

If someone wants to add something to the thread, a moderator or admin can easily unlock the thread.

OR

Is it possible to same way as with the B/S/T have posts made in threads, where the previous reply is over a year old, go to moderation first?

I think this is a good idea for the B/S/T section, but there have been comments on old threads in other threads that have added to the discussion.

For B/S/T I think an even shorter time limit would be great, like 6 months.

I do agree sometimes there are useful updates, but if that's the case a mod can always re-open the thread, and the timer is reset whenever another person makes a comment in the first place.

For example there is a thread now about texas laser systems. IMO it would be better for a member to post a new thread about the experience, thereby updating on current status of the company, vs bumping an old thread, where the first dozen posts are completely out of date.

I think this is a good idea for the B/S/T section, but there have been comments on old threads in other threads that have added to the discussion.

Even so, a new thread should be started and the old one, or rather its relevant parts, referred to in the topic post. Usually the info that adds to the discussion is relevant only to the information at the end of the thread anyway; so raising the entire thread to the top of the list doesn't help much. Threads that are completely useful are usually stickied anyway.

I'd also like to see morons who respond with pointless "me too" responses temp-banned for their idiocy like they are on the Something Awful forums. Then again, the only people who can post on that forum are those who have bought an account, versus advertising/donations here, so that may factor into whether stupid noobs should get temp-banned.
