What antivirus do you use?

Common sense works grat with Macs

Well you have to consider that there was only somewhat like 3 viruses for Mac and that apple already included protection in the latest versions of the platform.

Dont trust that MAC filter. Any n00b with a sniffer can bypass that with ease.

AVG and major OCD with port security.

yeh mac filter can be bypassed easily, there are tools that can de-authenticate good MACS and then u can change ur mac and still connect

mac filtering will slow down an attacker but isn't a method to stop altogether

do any of u guys work in IT field too?

I use the MAC filter and of course either WEP / WPA keys... . I also don't broadcast my SSID... .

Should I still be worried?

p.s. My webcam SW started up (automatically?) the other day and took a snapshot...   As the Webcam has a physical button that will do the same, I pressed it a few times to make sure it wasn't stuck. But, two days later, same deal... . What are the odds it could be an action from a Trojan app?

I haven't used an antivirus program in nearly ten years, and the only time I've ever had a virus was on a school computer, it was the blaster or sasser worm, I forget, and I *was* running an antivirus program at the time.. I forget which one it would have been.. I used F-Prot back then, but I think at school I was running whatever was preinstalled on the computer there.

Lately I've been getting a bit paranoid, since I started working at a computer store and started seeing dozens of people per week just crawling with scads of viruses, so I've been installing an antivirus and doing a scan every 6mo or so. Last round found no viruses except what it considered "hacking tools" (omg, vnc is a program for remote desktop, therefore it MUST be evil.. omg, you have a password recovery tool for that MSN password you forgot last year, this is a huge security risk!, omg you accepted cookies from LPF, therefore you're being tracked and your security is totally compromised!).. Anyways, the best antivirus I've used lately is probably NOD32.. It's lightweight, thorough, and gave me very few false positives. My least favorite is probably Norton Internet Security.. Pretty much half of the computers that come into my store riddled with viruses are running an up to date version of Norton, and when I uninstall it their computer doubles in speed.

McAfee is great. I have never gotten a virus, and my computer is quite fast. I hate Norton. It IS a virus.

ESET NOD32 is better than kapersky, it take less ressource.


I went from Norton, to AVG, then i went kapersky, then avast.. Now im using Nod32 & SS.
ESET Nod32 is faster than kapersky and avast... i will keep it in a while.

Of my 16 G of ram, all 3 of kaspersky's processes use a grand total of a whopping 15 megs. What ever will I do?

It uses more resources because it has real time protection, it tells you when an application does anything that is at all suspicious. Not just when it's virus footprint is in the database.

Norton just became more and more of a hog over the years. Now I won't even use it for free.
I've been using Avast! for a couple of years on multiple PCs with no problems.
It's only significant drawback is that the free version won't do scheduled scans, but does have a scan that will run in a screen-saver so it amounts to about the same thing.

I used to use Avast, until I realized what a piece of shit it was.

I have been using Norton recently, in the past few years. My experiences with going unprotected haven't been good - my old computer got infected with a virus and it never worked right after that, and before that my browser got so clogged up with thousands of pop-up ads that would just take over my entire screen and I had to reboot to get rid of them (but only until I would restart my browser).

However, back then I used IE - which truly sucks, now I use Mozilla and at least that has good pop-up protection. But yeah, Microsoft products are sitting ducks for the worst crud on the 'net. Anything that you have/run that isn't made by them will help you steer clear of the bad stuff.
