Hey guys, I've been planning to remake the FAQ with updated info. I think we have many new things to cover and to lower the amount of "What should I buy / Is this laser good? / etc" threads.

I'm making this poll to see how many members would like that and how many are willing to help (because I will need help).

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I agree. There is some outdated stuff there as well as stuff to add, as you say.

As a relative n00b, I'd be willing to help as much as, and in those areas where, you think I may be of benefit.

Maybe you want to setup a Suggestions for the FAQ or have Suggestions here? In any case, I hope you don't get bombarded with too many wild opinions.

Thanks, Niko!

Thanks for doing all this work Niko. As you know I am ready to help in any way I can, but as you also know I am.. busy.. for a week :shhh::angel:
After that I only have the usual lectures plus everything else so I should have time to help if it's still being worked on then.

I am willing to help, even though I have limited knowledge. Didn't see that there were multiple choices possible.

Needs re-write of at least parts, Can help, OMFG OPTION 5!

What we need is a nice, clear, smooth explanation of:

  • Very simple overview of what a laser is and why.
  • What the parts are in a DIY laser
  • What they do - diode, driver, in specific
  • Basic overview of semiconductors vs Ohm's law, why constant current is used
  • Summary of DPSS process
  • Beams and wavelength information, visibility (rayleigh scattering vs human eye response)
  • Finishing (or starting with) SAFETY and REPSONSIBILITIES section!

(Above is only a small selection of what we will probably need in a FAQ, I've only listed what came to mind at first)

Links to reviews of the most common "starter" lasers (dilda, focusable torches etc) and companies (o-like, DX, rayfoss, modwerx) would also be good, along with some of the best "DIY starter" parts - Jayrob's kits?

I will do the safety side as I have a few resources to pull from in that area. I would like to send out for veterans to review. Volunteers?
Responsibilities is a bit broad. Some is safety, some is legal. Any inputs to clarify?

Also what about a list of countries import/use restrictions. Just ask a member from each to contribute. Maybe Merry from Laserlands has a list of import restrictions.

I have exams now, but as long as you don't need me to write the bible I'll be glad to help ;)

And at the top of the FAQ put a link to Sam's Laser FAQ in HUGE BOLD UNDERLINED LETTERS. Not that anyone will read it, but everything a hobbyist could want to know about lasers of all types is there, and written by actual experts, not a bunch of laser forum junkies like us. It is without a doubt the best overall guide to lasers around, and it's free!!

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll be creating a FAQ thread with titles as guidelines and we'll work from there.

Don't worry, I hope you enjoy your busy week ;)

Also, yes, I think the safety measures should be at the top.

I'll add a "Useful links" title so we can add guides like that one :)
