ARG,

Why not keep the vet section, but just tweak the criteria for getting in? (Keeping all current members in, but applying the change to new vets only.) Each new vet is hand-approved by C0ldshadow anyway, so it wouldn't be an administrative problem.

Make it 1 year + rep power >100, or 1 year + >10 posted reviews/tutorials. Reward people for *anything* other than raw post count, and I'm sure we'll see a change in peoples' behavior, when it comes to posting for post count sake.

Using any quantitative measure really undermines the integrity of the measure. If you make it 100 rep, rep-whoring will ensue. If you make it 10 reviews / tutorials / etc., then we might see a drop in the quality of those.

You could make it so that a potential newcomer has to be voted in by current vets, but that would exacerbate the general feeling of cronyism.

Or, the section could be axed, which I don't think is an ideal solution either.

Ha, fair point about quantitative measures. I'll give you that. (Though personally I'd rather see rep-whoring or lesser-quality tutorials, than what we have now with post-spamming.)

Here's another alternative, then: Make it purely time-based. Two years. (Which is roughly what it would take you to accumulate 1000 posts, at 1.5 posts/day). What are the downsides there?

Honestly, I'd have no issue with a vote-based system, either. Anything besides what we currently have would be an improvement, IMO.

Then we have members who create an account, forget about it and come back in two years in the section. Some guy who posts once for help two years ago would still be a noob in my eyes.

The only solution I see is to remove the section, but that's not ideal either.

Or..

Make it so members are chosen, no length of time, no rep pre requisite , no post count, GOOD overall members are chosen.

The problem is "good" can be very subjective.

Who does the choosing? c0ld is not on here much.

Much as you, and other mods try to stay impartial, you're still human.

So do we put it to a vote of existing vets?

Nope, the mods choose.

Also, even though Ave isn't on the forum as such, we (the mods) are in contact with him quite frequently via email ect so if we felt a member deserved a "promotion" , he generally responds to his emails within an hour or so, time zones permitting.

Not directed at you, but I'm generally opposed to putting more power in the hands of existing authorities.

To be fair, its basically the way its done now.

Once a member reaches 1000 posts ect , the mods have a chat about it and take it from there.

As has already been said its not automatic entitlement, the final decision still goes to the mods or Ave...and ultimately , only Ave has the ability in AdminCP to grant access.

Well. It works. It isn't broken.

If the post count reformulation (not sure what else to call it ) can't be implemented for technical reasons, my only remaining suggestion would be to post a sticky in the rules section, expanding on the fact that Veteran status is not granted automatically.

.

^^ This.

However, what I would like to see is, if there are some truly outstanding members who contribute to the forum (and there are), not in monetary terms, but content, I'd like to see them "promoted" right away and to hell with the 1000 posts ect.

Similarly , absolute spammers and junk posters will NEVER get in the vets section.

For the vet forum: didn't we already discuss this whole "vet" thing in some post within the vet forum? I think Grix summed it up perfectly:

I'm going to speak my honest opinion here.

Why do we even have a veteran forum? It seems half the posts here are meta posts about who to let in and not let in and how many noobs there's around nowadays and yada yada. The rest of the posts are posts that could just as well be posted in a public forum and be of help or entertainment to everyone. This forum is just a snobby circle-jerk, and its very existence is what fuels the noobs to post useless filler posts in the first place.

I am happy that the people in the vet forum are mature enough to be aware of this though. Sometimes people are more concerned with "feeling special" than the more fundamental issues of why something exists or should exist.

As for the poll and OP, there may be a lot of shit-posts and replies on this forum, but there are also a lot of shit-posts that are helpful but essentially repeating the same information over and over again. For myself, I think I've replied with essentially the same long-winded soldering advice reply to two people.

Why do we provide all this redundant information? Because the majority of stickies are garbage. They're full of broken image links, lame product-centric tutorials, projects that were never completed, irrelevant information, dealing with obsolete or out-of-production products or companies, formerly cool stuff that isn't cool anymore, etc. They're the first posts people see in any given sub-forum, and they don't serve any purpose except to make us scroll down further.

Rather than restrict peoples' posting, I think this forum would be much better served if we removed a lot of the worthless stickies in this forum and slowly replace them with useful, well-written stickies -- exactly what the poll and OP is trying to promote. Then the "cream" will literally rise to the top of the forum post listings.

Perhaps we can nominate posts as exceptional for stickying and then have the posts/replies formatted, applied, and credited. The vet forum could even serve a useful purpose of discussing the nomination of those threads rather than its current "treehouse club" status.

For all the other conversation posts: whatever. I do think there is a lot of shit-posting here, but it is what it is. I'm going to retract my statements I've made before that I wished that we had some Something Awful type moderation. That's not in the "spirit" of this board. We want to remain open for new people to enjoy the hobby or just people in the hobby without forcing things down each others' throats, and a lot of the off-topic replies are pretty funny. A more concerted effort to move off-topic drifts to the off-topic forum would also help though.

I'm all for getting rid of the junk stickys , hell, I may even go on a pruning spree later myself.

Some of the stickys are paid for though, so obviously they have to stay.
