I had no idea that we had that much traffic!
How many new members do we get in a 24 hour period? Probably more then I thought. It sounded good to me if it was only 2 to 3 a day, but we probably do get more then that if we have that many visitors.

Plus I never took in account that both Avery and 2000 revelation, both live in North America. This would not work so well if someone was in a completely different time zone. New members continents away, would ended up having to wait a full day just to get a response.

Folks, I almost live on here and sometimes a whole day goes by without any new registrations, and on a busy day maybe 5-6 new registrations come in...

So it's not like 100 new users are sitting in the parking lot waiting to get in.

Vbulletin also has a feature that the new user can post, but the posts do not appear on the board, instead the are parked for moderator approval.

That way, hacked cell phone ads, Mrgoogfreak, etc.. that crap would never see the boards at all.

Seem to be to much extra work to check every new member, there are A LOT OF newbies these days

Good point,

I like the idea but I'm not in a position to say what extra work Avery and 2007 should or should not be doing so it's their call really.

I guess if they feel it would beneficial and they are comfortable with the extra work then by all means go ahead.

The only issue I can foresee is that both Avery and 2007 for some reason can't access or are away from then internet for a while and then no members would be able to join for a while.

I don't have a problem with us not helping NooBs in an "emergency" situation. I cannot imagine a situation with a NooB that actually would be an emergency.

However, I don't like giving the admin more to do AND I don't think this setting will help with the really problematic members anyway.

haha this is a great quote and I do agree with it, however sometimes there are those flies that you just can't kill with a regular flyswatter or a swift hand. Sometimes you just gotta whip out tha' RPG :evil:

I do think that there should be a panel of "trusted vets" so-to-speak, that are trustworthy and willing, that can moderate new users/posts in order to not have the huge load fall one or two already-busy people (like c0ld). With a panel of >5 people, it shouldn't be all that difficult.

I was about to suggest the same thing..

VB also has a "permissions" setting, so c0ld can set up a few different people who have ONLY permission to allow the posts through, or reject them.

so if you have like 1-2 on the east coast, 1-2 on the west coast, 1-2 in Europe, etc.. there should always be someone around to look at and approve/deny these posts.

No. This would be a huge amount of extra work for c0ld considering the amount of people registering here.

CPF has a system like this and it's extremely annoying. Basically your first two posts need to be 'mod approved' before they show on the forum. Any serious spammer or troll with a vendetta against the forum will just make two legit posts and then go on a rampage after clearance. All it really does is get rid of the stupid Chinese spammers.

Do you have statistics? Just how many people register here every day?

see my post above, Like I said I am on here every day usually starting as early as 5:00 am and often as late as 3:00 am, so I see every new one there is.

Think about this, my pre scripted greeting is almost always the first or second reply immediately after registration.

I was looking for a good topic to put a first post rather than the typical "I'm new" Welcome Topic and this is going to be it.

It's interesting to go to sites and read topics of how seasoned members want to restrict new members. I noticed that the person with the highest posts on this topic has over 11,000 of them. The lowest was 467; at least until I came along with my 1.

You may have over 10,000 members, but I doubt they'll all active. Probably more like 1-2% are. Restricting entry, like time limits, works to some degree. For example, I read this site for a few days before joining. I didn't HAVE to join, but I decided to. Had you restricted my entry, I probably would have just continued reading and maybe joined. The value of my topic contributions has yet to be determined as I am a noob with no knowledge of lasers. I'm sure some of my future questions are going to make all of you groan. But I could have had a PhD in optics to.

I also belong to a site that has a " 1 week " waiting period to join. I also belong to a site that opens registration for 24 hrs on a random time frame. Now that is a real pita. But I was determined to get in, so I hung out until the window opened. And they are real generous with the ban-hammer too.

My point. If you feel you must restrict us, go ahead, we'll just find another site if we don't think you're worth waiting for. I'm here because I think you're a good site. Now hopefully I haven't violated the rules about responding in old topics.

not a good introduction at all. poor etiquette to come into a place and say what we do wrong. don't you think your first post should have been laser related. there are plenty of forums out there where you can vent about what is wrong with society.

introduce yourself... as anyone would do meeting new people..

If you would have read the reason for the Thread... you would
have seen that it was mostly aimed at New Member accounts
being opened by Banned Members...
The only delay (if implemented) would be the Admins response time..

BTW...
when I go to a new place for the 1st time I don't go over to the
host and complain about how crappy I think her curtains look...
(It's just not good etiquette...)
