If you could get a free 300mw green?

Hey, great question :)

So if all the outputs are the same and money wasn't a factor. We're just looking at the best features.

Personally I'd go a Spyder II. 100% duty cycle with its TEC cooling and waterproof is pretty cool :) And it looks awesome :D

Problem is, the Spyder is a 200mW green laser, so you can't count it here. Didn't pseudo do a test where none of them could hold 200mW over 10 minutes or was that someone else?

I would go for an RPL/Prometheus (same thing) if I got one for free, I like the portability of them.

Herc or RPL. It would be a hard decision. I like the smaller size of the RPL but it would be cool to have a bat with a laser installed. [smiley=cheesy.gif]

Look at the thread man, it says 300mW green.

So in this fictional scenario, we are assuming the Spyder outputs 300mW. If all the power outputs of all the lasers models in this poll was 300mW, I wouldn't definitely take the Spyder.

For me it depends, but as weird as this may sound, I would choose neither the RPL nor Prometheus (which I sell). They're awesome lasers at better than awesome prices, but I've seen too damn many of them for one lifetime, and honestly their build quality leaves some to be desired. If I could choose any, guaranteed to 300mW for free, a lab module may do it if it were a very high quality unit. If it were one of the typical crap modules you see on places like DX though, I'll pass in favor of a portable.

As far as portables go a Herc would be an interesting laser to have just for kicks.

And the other option I'd say would be a Spyder I, emphasis on the I. A Spyder II would be pretty much at the bottom of the list due to their sub-par build quality. The Spyder I was an astonishingly solid laser though and I'd love to have another! ('astonishingly' is not an adjective I'm just throwing around for show - I truly was astonished when I first got to handle a Spyder I)

PS: As styro pointed out, you may want to merge the Prometheus and RPL option together since they are effectively the same thing (short of the name of course)

Is the RPL and Prometheus the same thing? It's the same 'model' made by the same 'manufacturer', but does that make it the same?

I mean, based on that reasoning, an X-125 from NOVA is the same as a 125mW Infiniti from Tech Lasers (I'm fairly sure, but you get the idea). No offense meant there pseudonomen137, just using extremes to explain the difference.

My point being they aren't the same, since they have different quality control and different resellers.

Again, no offense intended pseudonomen137. I'm not saying either model is better, just saying they are different :)

Personally I'd take the RPL-300 (oh wait, I already have one :p) because of Optotronics outstanding service, the longer warranty, and dealing with an actual company makes me feel safer as the buyer :)

The Spyder is rated 200-300mW which is a huge range but I was indeed assuming that it would put out 300mW (purely hypothetical that is)

Anyway: If money wasn't an issue my own choice would be the Herc for a few reasons: 100% runtime, runs on standard D cells or on adapter, the X10DR accessory and it's still portable.

When the time actually come to buy a laser I don't want to spend a lot more on it than $1000 I just want to have it for the hobby (and not for scientific research) so a higher priced model will not be justified I my case (and besides that, my wife will kill me :D )

Wow, if I could choose which free laser.... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] probably go crazy because I wouldn't be able to decide! Guess I'll just vote for the RPL since I wanted one so bad I bought one and I love it!

Truly it seems, the limiting factor on lasers is wives, not money.

Yes that's true ,  however my wife wanted me to order a blu-ray laser(and she paid for it) because it's her favorite color.    :-*

But it took me almost a year to get her used to the idea that I want to buy a $1000 laser, but that's ok now,   within a few months I will have one.

I've tried to go for the Herc300+X10DR but that was a little too much....    :-[
