I never really "built one" . I don't consider soldering a premade laser diode to a circuit " making one".

I had a red ruby rod for years (bought it in the '90's when I was 42), but it didn't have optically-polished ends. Ruby is Hard, so I never figured it out, I simply got an green Erbium-doped one later with polished ends.

I have a He Ne, but didn't of course, blow the tube. I bought it about 1985, when I was 40-something.

My Ruby laser is coming along. I may move before it's done, though. I plan to work on a few hopped-up SS lasers before then. I'm selling the HeNe--it's nice but it's only 5 mW. Not as interesting as pointer. See Ebay. I only paid $5 for it and I need to shed dead weight. It's a Meiles-Girot (S.P?) unit, the tube is in expanded foam so you can't see it. I assume the mirrors are at 45-degree angles.

Stupid Australian Laser Laws....

What Are the laws? Actually, I'm not surprised, just ignorant..

any laser aboce 1 miliwatt (yes 1 miliwatt ) is concidered illegal here in Australia and if they find you trying to import 1, you should start selling everying you own to pay the fine.....

That's hard to believe--but, then, I sold a lot of innocuous chemicals to Aussies who couldn't get them locally.

It's like--are they afraid you're going to off a few 'roos or something? Blind an Emu?:gun:

Maybe we should start a petition right here. I'd sign!;)

On topic: I've a lot of diodes from cheap R/W CD Rom drives I've cannibalized. We'll see how long they last, overdriven...

I had the god old underspec "5mW" that everyone did when I was a kid.
Got out of it pretty quick though because a friend shone his in my eye and it pissed me off. That eye watered in the wind for ~2 years after that actually.
Saw the Kipkay video and thought "that looks stupid, if he can light a cigarette with it, WTF will it do to his friggin' eyes?!?"
Started learning about visual acuity/damage and found the Laser driver - It can be done site.
His site led me here and so I probably built my first laser (1.25A 445) around the middle of August.

*I still flame kipkay's videos* ^_^

My first laser was a really cheap green that died a few months after I bought it when I was 17. (got it from Disney world)

And now I have build at least 8 different Handheld lasers and own around 20 handheld lasers.

Now I want to start collecting Labbies and eventually make a scanner.

(I hope this thread isn't too old to reply to... sorry...)

Mid 70s, I was 19 years old, Edmund Scientific HeNe red gas laser (I THINK it was ~ 5mw).

Currently: 1, and another 1 on the way.

Just aquired a LaserGlow 4-5mw green Lyra B-5 pointer, arrived early in the week.

Just ordered a 200mw Gatlin Waterproof Focusable from O-Like this morning.

Next I imagine I will try my hand at DIY. Any/all colors.

I think I was 11 or 12 years old. Im not 100% sure haha

My first laser was a 5mW greenie from Z-Bolt.com. My oldest sister bought for me for Christmas :D
Then 3 months later I bought a 55mW Greenie from wickedlasers when they resold CNI lasers. From there I got a 75mW greenie a year later and then a 100mW 6 months after that. When I was 15 I purchased a 150mW greenie from WL again that was also a CNI GLP. All pens were stolen eventually :( That put an end to my interest in lasers until about a year ago when I joined and became a member here at LPF

I now own 4 lasers :D

Laser Number One: My 1.9W 445nm Ehgemus Grooved Alien Host

Laser Number Two: 40mw 532nm Star Trek Phaser - yobresal

Laser Number Three: 120mW 532nm BOB Laser/Yobresal GB Waterproof Hand Held

Laser Number Four: 100mW(need to lpm because it looks like it warms up to its peak after about 1.5-2 minuets and the final peak is MUCH higher then 100mW) 532nm GOLD host SkyLasers Hand Held

:thanks:
Take care and all the best to you
- Raj
