Very true Jerry. My point was simply that no one who has spoken so far has the right to lay out the rules here except perhaps 2007revolution. I don't agree with or condone those kinds of statements, but they are protected by freedom of speech in the US, and as mfo pointed out, so is one's right to call them out. This website is not required to allow freedom of speech, but it's not for common members to state what is acceptable and what isn't. That's all I'm saying, and it's really not entirely relevant to this situation per se anyway. Here, what c0ld says goes, and as TJ said it would seem that c0ld has spoken.

LOL And I thought I was good at back peddling.

No backpedaling.. that's the beauty of the oxymoron that is freedom of speech. Both sides are protected. I just wanted to make sure that people see where I'm coming from and don't assume I'm defending these actions.

It's like... (fictitious) If I went to an LPF member's beloved mother's funeral...
and at the funeral surrounding the grave.. I made a "comment" that it was time
she kicked the bucket.. she was a biatch..

It is free speech... it is my comment... but it is Disrespectful... hurtful...
showing no empathy.. and entirely inappropriate with no concern for others
at that funeral...

Stating that it was only a "comment" just doesn't wash....IMO

Jerry

Very well said Jerry.

Personally I think freedom of speech is a load of rubbish if it is an excuse to be derogatory and rude to other members.

I'm quite sure the actual use of "freedom of speech" is not to be a rude self obnoxious ****, and should not be used as an excuse when someone is called out.

But since we're all friends again you can take the above comment lightly :p

We only have free speech unless it directly brings someone to harm, but that isn't the issue here, this is:
5. General Prohibited Uses

You may not use the Website in order to transmit, distribute, store, or destroy

Material (a) in violation of any applicable law or regulation, (b) in a manner that will infringe the copyright, trademark, trade secret, or other intellectual property rights of others or violate the privacy, publicity, or other personal rights of others, (c) that is defamatory, sexually explicit, obscene, harassing, threatening, abusive, hateful, terroristic or otherwise objectionable. You may not use the web site in order to transmit any advertisements, solicitations, chain letters, pyramid schemes, investment opportunities, or other unsolicited commercial communication (except as otherwise expressly permitted by Laser Pointer Forums).

rangedunits has been on this forum quite a long time and to be honest it is only recently that I have started noticing a bad attitude from him.

Personally I don't see a need to ban him.

His comments can be quite distasteful to say the least, though I find that the Haiti comment no matter how inappropriate and in bad taste, was just a bad attempt at a joke, something along the lines of Kramers stand-up act that cost him his career.

Extremely inappropriate? Yes...

Grounds for a ban? My .02 says no

He's a waist of virtual space, I'm quite sure he doesn't own a laser and makes no effort to ever contribute anything useful to this forum, all of his posts consists of pointless "yes" "no" and three word answers.

I would say he doesn't deserve a ban because to be fair he hasn't done much wrong, but he's done nothing right either, a two week ban would slap the sense out of most people being stupid and posting innapropriate things, but the issue is ranged posts nothing usefull, so if he stops posting his crap he'll be posting nothing at all... there for he may aswell be banned I guess
Apparently, i have no lasers...

This is pretty much my opinion on the matter. While a bit inappropriate and disrespectful it was really nothing but a joke with no real ill intent behind it. He probably saw it on 4chan or something and thought people would get a laugh out of it.

People like rangedunits add entertainment to the forum imo.

Give Rangedunits a chance, do we really need to ban him for a comment (yes I read the comment, and I agree that it was more than inappropriate)? Maybe he is somewhat useless to this forum, but he never stole or lied, unlike our latest banned member (Tyler). We did give Tyler a chance. Why? Because we thought that he was useful here, but in reality it was just a false impression (given in major part by the fact that he owned a shop and advertised). Do I really have to remember you all that Tyler did before he got banned? Is what RU did more significant than what Tyler did? I can't really answer that question, because I think it remains of personal opinion.

I hope I made a point; but not necessarily that I want you to compare his act with ones from other banned members, but still, I don't think he deserves a ban, just a lesson, and this poll is probably the best one you can give him.

But I have to ask something to Rangedunits:

a public apology.

would just like to point out 1 thing.

this is a privately owned forum - aka avery pays for it.

soon as that comes into the picture, freedom of speech goes out the door.

if it says in the rules, no racist comments etc, that means, dont say nigger, spic chink, gook, towel-head, jiggaboo, cracker, slant-eyed fuck, removed, etc..

^^^^double negative, but you get the idea.

basically, when you dont have freedom of speech, dont complain when you get bitched at or flammed for assuming you do in the first place.

and in the haiti thread, that actually pissed me off, cause my uncle grew up in haiti's capital, and his home town was destroyed, and 5 people he knew since he was a child died.

ranged i hope everytime you walk passed a black person, they punch you in the face.

I think I read somewhere that 'freedom of speech' is mainly about the press and censorship -- not any persons right to say whatever the hell they want--haters have the right to shut the F*** Up.IMO===also -found this in a search---'Most of us have heard about "shouting fire in a crowded theater" and understand it as a limitation of free speech. However, ushers are not going to place tape over people's mouths upon entering the theater to limit their rights. People have freedom of speech, but there is also accountability that accompanies misuse of the right. Some people fail to understand this and actually believe freedom of speech means freedom from responsibility, liability or penalties for harm that may have been caused.'---also Don Imus' Firing was no violation of the first amendment--it was the 'right' of his boss.
