So my Xbox is now just for show. At first I got one red light them after doing some unconventional fixes it started working again but now it has officially died. When I power it on now all I get is a green light in the center and nothing on the TV.

So frick, what to do... warranty is long gone. Nor do I want to pay to fix something that isn't known for lasting more than two years anyways.

So does anyone have the new Xbox? How do you like it? I think I want to get a new one. I was thinking of getting a PS3 but I already have a few games for 360 that I'd like to continue to play, namely Forza Motorsport 3 and Left for Dead 2. The only games I would really like to play on PS3 are God of War III, Gran Turismo III, and prolly the new Final Fantasy games too. But other then that I'd give up all the games I have for Xbox and miss out on Halo Reach, which I have been looking forward to.

So should I buy another POS Xbox that is surly to break in another few years and continue to play the games I have, or should I get a PS3 and enjoy the Blu-Ray player and start playing some new games?

I'd get both but my play money is almost all spent on Lasers and my RC cars.

The Red ring of death is caused by bad solder connections. They used a crap solder claiming it to be safe ... like kids are going to open their 360s and lick the motherboard.

The repair is replacing the xclamps with the right size screws and washers. It holds the board closer together with the components or something like that. The solder ends up cracking and the connections break.
Read here Llamma's Xbox 360 3RLOD (three red light error) X-Clamp Fix
And here http://www.x-clamp-fix.com/catalog/product_info.php?info=p5_X-Clamp-Fix-DIY-Kit.html

If it still has an error that means the solder needs to be remelted in which case you do this

Whether you get 1 or 3 its from the same problem. Broken solder connections.

The newer ones don't have this issue though. Getting a new one wont break down on you.

microsoft has known about the crappy quality solder theyve been using the whole time.. they like it that way b/c they make more money off people like you. the new xboxes just came out.. whose to say in 2-3 months they wont start showing up with a new version of the RRoD? be a sucker if you want.. your just making microsoft richer in the process and your getting poorer from all the consoles your buying...

p.s. its not always the same problem.. it depends on the error code as well as the secondary error code... might help to research a little more next time..

the comment wasnt directed at you. please pay attention :p

People like me?
Look "sucker", I never bought a new Xbox 360. I repaired a broken down one I bought off of ebay.
Tell you what bud, think before you type. I know all about the error codes and there are no secondary ones. When the 360 is in service mode it blinks the code. 1 code. I've done many repairs on a bunch of different consoles so before you make judgments on me go take your stupid comments and post them elsewhere.

If you got grudges against microsoft I suggest you lay them on someone else preferably off of LPF

Thanks for the post Crazy Jay! I think I might try that heat gun overheating method.

When I first got a red light the error code said it was an Ethernet modem hardware issue or something like that. I believe it was E73. Anyways, I read online that an unconventional fix was to disable the fans and purposely overheat the mother board until the system goes into auto shut down. It actually worked the few times I tied it. After the overheat the system started up fine for a while. But them I started having graphics problems. It would freeze and I'd get glitching patterns on the screen. Now even if it does boot up I can't play for 5 minutes without it freezing. Those are GPU problems so I'm guessing that if I try to heat it up to fix the solder joints it might fix the problem.

It's as good as dead to me right now so I might as well try it and see what happens.

I hope MS will learn from this and use better solder connections in their new Xbox should I have to buy a new one.

BTY guys, please cut the drama. I'd like for this thread to stay open.

Glad I could help. Its pretty much the same thing for each of those 360s.
I've gotten as far as installing the custom firmware and swaping dvd drives.
You have to get the motherboard code. Got the connectivity kit and everything.

Good luck on it!

So check it, I've got it stripped down now. I'm going to try the method where you overheat the GPU but not the CPU. Supposedly it will get hot enough to resolder itself back on board. Even though I'm not getting 3 rings I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with the GPU. I tried to boot it up and within 2 seconds it froze.

See look before the intro logo could play out it froze!

Here it is, maybe my laser can fix it. :p

Tomorrow I'll hit up Home Depot and get the screws and washers I need. We'll see what happens.
