To be fair, the woman is far from blameless... it seemed like she could have yielded/went into the right lane several times. People who drive in the left lane, slowly, really tick me off to. Of course what the guy did was way beyond normal, so he got what he deserved.

I was hoping someone would take the truck's side! He wasn't tailing her THAT badly. I get a tail closer than that twice a week, but never when I'm in the passing lane. He should have flashed his lights to let her know that he wanted to pass her.

That is one of my biggest peeves. I once drove seemed like 10-15 minutes straight behind a rolling roadblock on a 4-lane interstate. Really, the morning and evening commute are what have made me lose faith in humanity. If so many people are so dumb, why do I still live on this planet? Perhaps a better question is, what is the point of a driving test if it doesn't weed out the bad drivers? What is the point of making driving a car a licensed privilege and not make it a requirement that you understand how to drive?

I love driving, but I think robotic cars need to happen sooner rather than later. Robotic, networked cars. Americans already gave up all privacy, they should have no qualms about letting the government control their cars too.

I would be perfectly willing to sacrifice my "privilege" to drive, if it meant not sitting in traffic, or a lot less of it, and that I would be able to do other things, like read a book, or go online. Technology is really moving forward in this regard, and chances are we'll see some form of implementation within 1-2 decades at the most, barring any major cataclysm.

Regarding licensing, IMO the requirements are extremely, obscenely lax.

A 5-10 minute "road test" on a closed track with no other cars, at 5-15mph, and a written test that can be taken in languages other than English, and can be "studied" for by reading a 100 page book, but summarized in under 5 pages?

This licensing exam also only have to be passed ONCE, only. It's a joke. So of course there are drivers that have no practical knowledge about how to drive, are a bit clueless as to the rules of the road vs the printed laws, and absolutely lack experience.

On top of that you have the willfully ignorant, and the reckless a$$holes. It's a recipe for disaster.

Personally I would love to see licensing requirements become a lot stricter, for example a 6 hour driving test to be conducted on the road, in two hour increments, and more then just a pass/fail assessment, so that the tested can work on specific areas of concern.

A once a decade re-examination with both a written and driving test would also weed out a lot of no longer capable drivers from being on the road.

This wouldn't solve the road rage, driving too slow in the left lane, and distracted driving problems, but it would be a nice start. Accident rates would be reduced, insurance rates could be reduced in turn, and the industry that already exists (and I might add is really badly regulated) for driving schools, would see a boost.

Personally I had a driving class in high school, senior year, for one quarter, where two students, and an instructor were in the car. We would switch from one period to the next, between who got to drive, and who got to just sit there and watch. About a year later I took my driving test, after hiring a driving school car, and instructor, for two hours, before the test. Written test was a joke, and the driving test equally so. The only comment from my exam was that I drive too fast. That said, at the time I was a really shitty driver :p

That guy should have flashed his lights, maybe he even did, and she should have merged over. In NJ, I know for a fact she would have received a ticket for that video too, for driving, without passing, in the left lane, and for using her cellphone as a camera, while driving.

I took my driving test in real traffic. Want to solve the problems? Do what the Germans do. They pay at least $1,000 to get their license from what I've heard. I know they have to take drivers ed. They are the best drivers I've dealt with. I don't think they have to do 2 hours worth of driving at once. I don't think it matters if you drive 15 minutes or two hours.

It would also help if traffic laws were enforced. I've seen all kinds of signs saying keep right except to pass. I've never seen anybody get pulled over for that though. The cop usually just passes the person on the right.

I'm not sure of the details, but from what I remember when friends visited, one mentioned that their driving test was long, either 2 or six hours. This was about ten years ago though, so I have no clue what the situation is now.

About traffic laws... I agree, but there is no practical way to enforce all traffic laws, and in many cases, traffic laws run contrary to reality, and safety. For example compliance rates to 50mph limit on highways, is below 40%.

A revamp of traffic laws to be based on safety, rather then revenue generation would be needed, and cops would be up in arms if they could no longer write speeding tickets, to boost the department budgets.

To expand a bit on what BShanahan14rulz wrote, it would be great if new cars also came with an always on set of cameras, the technology would be relatively cheap to add, even now.
