What is the best bank for a Checking account?

So my Chase checking account used to be good enough for me but now they no longer have free wire transfers. They also decided to start charging a $2 fee everytime I use an ATM that isn't theirs....and NO I am not talking about the fee that the ATM machine charges me right there on the spot. I am talking about an additional fee that the banks charges me seperately for using any ATM machine that is not a Chase ATM. Amogst other reasons I have decided to pull all my money out and find a better bank. So far I have found Charles Schwabb checking to be very attractive. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

well you arent screwed if they are fdic. which covers up to 100k but if you have multiple accounts each with a beneficiary then you are covered up to 100k per account with a beneficary.

i current use wells fargo. have basic atm charges but i love them because checks i get do not get put on hold. they go right though to my checking.

I use wachovia(which is now wells fargo) But they do all the same gay fees and charges for me as well, and when you overdraft, they let you keep overdrafting untill you get a letter saying you owe them several hundred dollars, but so far they have always taken off any overdraft fee, and they put my money in right away, without holds. But its not super great, it was better IMO before fargo bought em out.

Dude make some calls. Each bank has their own rules, and the only way to know them is call.

FTFY. But that was way back in the day. It was a whole different bank before the First Union merger/buyout.

Although really, it hasn't changed yet with the Wells Fargo merger/buyout. Almost nothing about their business has really changed yet, so I'm not sure why you think it's instantly worse.

And there's one sure-fire way to avoid overdraft fees: stop overdrafting your account.

Local bank are good too. You dont lose money if they go down, and they usually give you a prize or something if you sign up. You can negotiate too. If you tell them what you want, they usually give it to you. I'm my case I have free checking, and free ATM withdrawal. I had to deposit $700, but there are no other fees, except over draft. Any bank will charge you for that, unless you pay over draft insurance, which is like $3 a month or so.

Haven't you been watching the news? It's the BIG banks you need to worry about.

And all of them are.

the reason i brought up the fdic thing is because the member that mentioned getting screwed or what ever he said... he is from the UK.

I say any credit union is the best bet! Free atm at any CU nation wide!
I use SAFE CU & Schools CU.
