People speak so highly of it, yet it's giving me such crappy quality.

Here's a screenshot of a video in VLC player:

Here is the same video played in windows media player:

What is... the deal? :wtf:

VLC is known for playing every type of video, but quality is another thing. It may be using different codecs than the Media Player. Thus the quality is less.

I also have a problem with VLC when playing DVDs - instead of playing the whole setup it goes directly to the "warning, copyright, blablabla" and then refuses to play any more.
Now I mostly use DivX & RealPlayer.

VLC is good for playing weird filetypes, just to see what they are. But once I've seen the file, I'll usually convert it to something iTunes, or PowerDVD can play.

I find BS Player to be the best. Its a simple format to run, plus it gives you advanced options too in case you want to tweak. I've never had any issues with it.

Well I suppose VLC is useless then as WMP + k-lite mega codec pack will play any file type and in high quality and simply just looks good as well :p

Well, VLC is helpful for at least 2 things, imho .....

First, it plays almost any existing types of codecs (with few exceptions for the weirdest types)

Second, it reject to execute the executable content embedded in the hidden data tracks of ASF, WMV and MOV filetypes, and, trust me, it's not a feature to underestimate ..... with the same easyness that a "tricked" WMV file can open a webpage, send your ID and file title to page owner, and ask you to buy a license for see the file, it can open a page in background, download a virus, and install it without you notice anything, if you embed the right executables in the video file .....

So, as personal suggestion, use the player that you prefer for the WELL KNOWN and TRUSTED files that you have, but use VLC for anything you downloaded that is not a pure, plain AVI with no addon tracks ..... and just for be sure, also for them, when you check unknown videos ..... i think the proverb is "always better safe than sorry", right ? :D
