Picked this up form fleabay for next to nothing, just for the hell of it.

Think the tube may already be missing though.

Links to big images below. This thing weighs the same as a small car, so I'm going to have to get the car to get it home, then I'll do a teardown.

-----------UPDATE----------

Teardown Completed

Well I had a very pleasant suprise, the tube was indeed still in the housing, and intact, and it's a big ass tube as well...and it weighs a ton.

Top frame removed.

Next I suspected it might be filled with oil, which was indeed the case so I drained it off and removed the innards.

And after removing the side plates, I was greeted with this, one lead lined vacuum tube holder, and one of the biggest HV transformers I've ever seen :)

Time to break that puppy out.

Its a boy!

Top of the HV transformer & lead lined tube mount.

So there you have it, what a score.

Update 2

May have found the reason it was taken out of service , looks like it had an arc or flashover.

This is right above the terminals for the filament transformer..

And the filament transformer itself..

And here are close-ups of the emission area ..

And the filament powered at just under 3V..

Thanks for looking.

Update 3

I'm not even going to try and figure the wiring out on this filament transformer!

I would, however, like to try and get the HV transformer going, suggestions?

The tube back in its lead lined housing to keep it safe.

Re: Another X-Ray thread

Dang I hate thumbnails!!! Trying to enlarge them makes them dissappear at least on my phone.
Sorry Ped, nothing personal. I can't understand why so many members just don't post 800x600. Makes it easier to not only see the pics but to manipulate them. Really wanted to see what was on the second pics label.

Edit:
Dang I love that you added the links to big pics!!!:)

Why do you think the tube may be missing? Price?

Re: Another X-Ray thread

If you look at the second (internal) pic, it looks like there are mount pillars , like something should be there..otherwise its just a big empty space.

Re: Another X-Ray thread

Hmm.. is it just me or that Ped has quiet a lot of toys?:D

-A bunch of lazors.:D
-Some Ozone machine.:D
-High voltage stuff.:D
-A latest addition to his toy box an X-ray machine...:D
-Next is a nuclear fusor?? :D

Ped what are you cooking up?:D

on the serious note:

-may be Aluminium to reflects light.
-Copper act as a heat sink for the aluminium window as some ionizing X-rays is absorbed as heat by the window...

Re: Another X-Ray thread

Nice that it includes the tube info on a sticker. Yeah the copper window and aluminium tube are a low energy cut filter. It only allows higher energy photons to exit, reducing blurring of images and the absorbed rate low density targets would experience.

Congrats and what's the next step?

Please, I don't want to see the shells of thousands of smoke detectors in your backyard;)

One of these days someone is going to wonder where Ped is, check on him and find just a permanent shadow etched into the floor or wall:D

You're not the first to say that  , it's a miracle I'm still alive :D

Next step is some kind of dosimeter / geiger counter before I fire it up. If someone can help me with that I'd appreciate it.

Updated the OP again with more info & pics.

Beautiful tube, what a score! Shame about the transformer though, those are nice to have working.

If it's just the filament winding that arced/ opened, you might be able to wind your own to the same transformer. You said it was a 3 volt filament, right? You could use some HV wire to wrap a couple of windings around the laments, if you can access it.

Edit: Oh, I see it has a separate filament transformer.
