Ugh, Wisdom Teeth...

Ugh, wisdom teeth, I hate them, or rather I hate them getting pulled. That's what I did this morning, went to the dentist, little NOS, and BAM, I'm done, felling fine... till I get in the car and my mouth is just gushing blood, and it stayed that way for about 3 hours. I went through about 13-15 pieces of gauze., then it finally stops. Then the freezing went away and my mouth is killing me, can't talk, can't eat (and I am HUNGRY), having a pretty crappy day so far.

So, my question: Who has had their wisdom teeth pulled and how bad was it?

i had mine pulled 3 years ago. the doctor gave me some n20 and started an IV; next thing i know a nurse is helping me move to a computer chair to roll me around. once i woke up, i left with my parents and they went to a home improvment store. i was waling around with them and almost passed out.

The first day sucked. i couldn't eat anything except ice cream and oatmeal. the pain wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, but the pain medicine (oxycodone) helped. all 4 sockets bleed for 2 days. I only needed the pain meds for a couple days. I was back at school the next day. all and all, not too bad.

about 2 months later, one of the healed up sockets got infected due to a small bit of something left over. some antibiotics took care of it.

Sorry to hear that. I have a friend who got hers pulled, and she couldn't eat for 4 weeks. But then my other friend got his out, and was better in a few days. It just depends sometimes...

God, when I got mine pulled my cheeks were swollen for close to two weeks. My friends called me a chipmunk. But the surgery went great, the meds kept the pain at bay, and I was fine about 2 days after, minus the swelling. :D

I had them both taken out separately(today was the second one and I was way worse last time, with tons of swelling. This time it seem to be going better.

Thats what my dentist tried doing to me. He wanted to do it separately. I told him no, to do it all at once. I figured if I was going to be in pain just, do it and get it over with.
I think they just do it to make more money by having you come back a second time.

i was fully awake when i got mine pulled the 2nd time around. my tooth was impacted so the guy was yanking the crap out of my tooth. i could feel him jerking it and forcing it with his whole body. i just put my trust in him that he knew what he was doing. it was kinda freaking me out that he was using his whole body and trying to rip that shit out. one good thing is that at least i know my teeth are in VERY good :D LOL.

as far as the aftermath. it's best not to use straws or smoke or any of do any of the other activities advised against. if you bust your stitches you could end up with dry socket. i never had it cuz i followed the regulations.

the only bad part the 2nd time around is i was smoking so i had mean withdrawals so i used nicoderm patches. i quit for some time, but i semi started up again, but that's a different story.

you should also open your mouth and stretch your jaw. that is also recommended after a day or so. as far as the pain goes... it will pass in time. i never used pain killer. i have a high pain tolerance. make sure you take ALL your antibiotics.

Ya mine were impacted too, and he was having a fun time getting those out.(not) He had to drill them into 3 pieces and take them out separately.

My dad's work has total health coverage so we did not have to pay a penny.

My dentist started to perspire while he was extracting my wisdom teeth and some of his sweat had dripped off his face and landed onto mine. I didn't get gassed or anything they just gave me some numbing stuff and rubbed it on my gums, seemed to work well enough. I could still feel the pressure and the blood ooze from the expanding gash he made with that damn blade though. That combined with the sweat dripping onto me is what I hated, not so much the pain of it all in itself....
Although, there were problems receiving my prescription of painkillers and I ended up taking them about an hour and a half later than I really needed to. I could feel my face swelling up. Oh geez. Yea, wisdom teeth stories are the greatest lol.

I guess you can say I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm 26 and never had any wisdom teeth pulled.

Had mine cut out last November.

So all 4 teeth were impacted (all at an angle, still under the gums) but after x-rays and all, the doc said it should take about 45 minutes for the surgery (full anasthesia), 15 minutes in the recovery room to wake up from anasthesia, and then I could go home.

Well after 1.5 hours of surgery, my wife is getting worried.... You see, normal teeth are supposed to have 4 straight roots each. But my teeth? No, my bottom left wisdom tooth decided to have EIGHT roots instead of the normal four. And the bottom right wisdom tooth, not to be outdone, decided that instead of straight roots, it would have roots that were hook-shaped, and CURVED into my jaw bone. Added to that, they apparently couldn't keep my airway open and had to put an oxygen tube down my throat through my nose.

So yeah, they finally got it done...but with the extra drugs they had to give because of the longer surgery, and I apparently couldn't handle the drugs that well anyway, I spent 2.5 hours in the recovery room before I could actually stand up on my own without fainting or getting extremely nauseous. But I swear to FSM I don't remember but about 2 minutes of the 2.5 hours I spent in there, the rest is GONE. I remember giggling as they gave me the drugs, right before I went out, then I remember walking to another room, and then I remember complaining that my wife was overprotective as we were leaving the office (my wife didn't like this one bit, but it was cleared up when she learned that I didn't remember a single minute of the previous 3 hours, during which I had been unable to stand up at all, and I was calling her that because I honestly believed she was fussing over the 5 minutes that I actually did remember.)

And Vicodin, that stuff would be great, if not for the fact that one pill knocks me out completely, like asleep for hours.

The first day all I could eat was ice cream and mashed potatoes (highly recommended when you're really hungry, because they're actually filling), but by day 3 when they took the sutures out of my gums I was back to normal with just a tiny bit of swelling left.

ETA: Oh, and I forgot the best part! With no dental coverage, I got to pay $1800+ for the privilege of the whole experience!

I had all four of mine pulled. Aside from throwing up blood in the car on the way home (my mom was prepared with a barf bag so it didn't get all over) I healed quickly and within a week was totally fine. Was knocked out for the surgery though.
