UFO? Doubtful. But what DID I see?

Last week I spent a few days camping in eastern Oregon. I was off on my own just outside the woods after dark. I was watching the sky, looking for meteors, when I noticed a white light, like an airplane, slowly moving across the sky. But unlike an airplane, it had no flashing lights.

I looked at it through a pair of binoculars, but that didn't help except to confirm that it had no flashing lights on it. For the next several nights I witnessed the same object, or one just like it, again moving across the sky. Sometimes it would be going in the opposite direction from the previous night.

It was not a meteor. I know what those look like, and I saw several during my trip. It also wasn't a satellite, I'm pretty sure, because it appeared closer to earth (thus bigger) than they usually are, and it wasn't moving as fast. I've seen satellites going across the sky many times too, and know what they are like.

Weather balloons are out of the question too, as whatever it was didn't hover, but moved in a straight line slowly across the sky as some planes might.

There were several planes that crossed the night sky as I watched, and all of them had flashing lights. Plus, no matter how far away the planes, I could always eventually (sometimes barely) hear the engine. From the 'mystery light' I heard nothing. The campgrounds and woods were dead silent at night, so if the object made a sound I should have heard it.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what this/these might have been?

When you say you witnessed it over "several nights" , was it at the same time every night? , The ISS passes over the UK at the same time regular as clockwork , that appears as a bright white light moving across the sky.

Did you get any pics by any chance?

Your sighting reminded me about something UFO like I saw when I was about 12 years old. I remember my mom and I were on our way to McDonalds from our house and saw a hovering orange colored glowing triangular object over a farm field beside the road. We stopped for a minute to look at it but stupidly (have no idea why now) decided to continue on to McDonalds and hope to see it when we got back but when we returned it was not there! :(

My mom still remembers the event as well and we both know it was not the McDonalds Golden Arch that we saw. :p

On a related note I think it is really interesting that the FBI recently declassified many of their UFO related documents along with files on the MAFIA etc from FOIA requests.... On the FBI website they have some declassified documents on the Roswell crash and it even mentions the 3 alien bodies that were discovered in the wreckage, noting that it was first thought to be a weather balloon crash but the 3 - 3 foot tall bodies of non human - but humanoid looking beings that were found made them question that explanation.

Link to one FBI Declassified File discussing the Roswell crash with alien bodies:

FBI — Guy Hottel Part 1 of 1

FBI Declassified files:

FBI — The Vault

UFO General Section:

FBI — UFO Part 1 of 16

It's really an interesting collection of declassified UFO files... There is almost too much to read!

I can't say for sure what time it was, but around the same time probably. Somewhere between 9:30-10:00 PM.

But since I saw it going in two different directions, that seems unlikely too- unless the ISS does that.

ElectroMagneticFreak: No pictures, sorry. I had a little pocket camcorder and tried to film the stars/meteor shower, but it didn't pick anything up. Even if I had gotten a pic, it would have just been a small white dot in a black sky.

but I don't think that would explain why it was going the opposite direction sometimes. :p

you doubt it was a ufo? you couldnt indentify it could you? :p

i also had seen something weird in my life wich my parents also saw at desame time. a flying blue led or whatever like 3 meters or so above the rooftops. flying in 100% straight line and the wind was going in opposite direction. didnt make any noise and flew away into desame straight line until it was out of sight. that makes me believe it wasnt a RC toy.

Anything you can't explain and it is moving in the sky is an UFO by definition. Unidentified Flying Object

I remember one night I was coming home from some event or a friends place, I can't really remember...

Either way I looked out the window up into the sky and saw a huge fireball, It had me puzzled for a
few moments but it turned out to be a F-111 doing a fuel dump

Closest thing I've ever had to seeing a UFO to this day :p
Still a pretty cool experience!

I saw something similar a few years back camping but in Ontario,
Same lights as you except it was kind off "teleporting" in all different directions mainly zig zags.
It sounds really stupid I know but I'm 90% sure I actually saw it & I wasn't drunk :p a few of my friends & family were there & also saw it, it was at around 3Am also... We only saw it that one night :D

Planes don't always have flashing lights. In fact, most of the ones where I live don't flash.

Maybe they're not required to flash above a certain altitude or a certain distance away from an airport? There's no major airport near me, and probably no major airport out in the country where you're camping.

ISS (international space station) ZARYA. You can download an app to track it and see when it will be over your head. If put $20 on it that's what you saw. It's a brilliant sight to see and it moves pretty quick across the sky.

Edit: oh yeah ALL planes must have a beacon light on them. Unless its stealth military or something...

Could be a stealth military plane or helicopter?

The main reason I didn't think that it was a UFO is because it wasn't behaving like they generally are reported to. It wasn't flying fast- in fact it was going pretty slow- and in a straight line rather than off in odd directions. That doesn't mean that it wasn't one, though.

And besides the fact that it had no flashing lights, I don't feel that it was a plane or helicopter because the light was constant. With an aircraft, as they head away from you the main light usually dims from view. This didn't. It stayed at the same brightness no matter where in the sky it was. Also, as I mentioned it was totally silent. I saw several actual planes those nights, and could always hear the engine at least a little. Not so with this thing.

I guess it's just one of those head-scratchers that you tell about years from now, lol!

Funny... I saw the exact same light in Sokcho, South Korea in the early evening.
Most certainly its a satellite.
