It's times like these where I really wish I had a lathe, metal shears, and a welder.
I finally decided to start a really cool project that I haven't really had the money for, but now that I'm getting some money, I can use some of it to start my project.

I realized that the most expensive part will be asking others to machine parts. Which is why I wish I had my own lathe.
I will also be welding. And cutting. And I just wish I had my own tools so that I could save money.

Does anyone know of cheap but good quality lathes, metal shears or welders?

I want to start this project so bad, so I will need some help if nobody minds :)

Thanks again!

Might need to be a bit more specific .. what kind of material/thickness are you thinking of using?

You want a Mig welder. Easy to use, and learn. They are fairly cheap too. You should be able to pick a small one on Craigslist for under $100.

Ya, MIG is point and shoot, very simple and relatively safe. Look for one with a built in automatic wire feed system. Flux cored wire doesn't require a shielding gas, all other wire does. Shielded (with gas) makes for a much nicer weld and larger variety of metals workable, but you have the extra expense and hassle of filling and purchasing tanks as well as learning tank safety.

Well a mini lathe for sure, but very cheap. Which is obviously hard to find.
And I am working with metals from brass to steel. 20 gauge to 16 gauge.

I love littlemachineshop.com.
Or
Harbor Freight. Most stores stock the 7"x10" mini lathe and you can usually find 25% off coupons. They also sell welding setups.

Thanks! I've been through Harbor Freights stuff and I love all the cheaper prices, I dont know if Ill be buying any of their mini lathes, but I do like some of the metal shears.

Yah, I've definitely been looking for a MIG. I read up on all of the different kinds and that one seems to be less of a hassle to deal with. The problem is, the ones I find on Craigslist that are cheap, are either broken, extremely old or really beat up.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

Also, what do you guys think Tony Stark is using to open and close his flight stabilizer in this video?

RedBalcony > Iron Man- Flight Stabilizer

Is he using hinges on the other side? If so, what kind do you guys think?
And what is he doing to lock it when he closes it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

wait, are you trying to build a iron man suit?

I would love too! But im only trying to build things using ideas from the movie. If i had enough money for tools and supplies, i would build that suit in a heart beat. I love Iron Man ^_^

Hard to say... if I would rather have the abilities/powers of Thor, or the genius, money, and obviously suit of iron man:p

From that universe though, Gene/Phoenix had by far the best powers:p

That combination would be outrageous!

I hope that what I build turns out awesome looking!

Does anyone have an idea as to how he locks the flight stabilizer in the video? And if hes using hinges?

I would assume hes not using hinges because of how bulky they would be. Is there any other way something like that can be attached to the flight stabilizer and close it?

Thanks everyone!!

Except that Jean Grey went absolutely batshit crazy, at least in the movies anyway.

One problem with the realistic version of the iron man suit is that it would be so heavy no one could wear it. Aside from carbon fibre no material is strong enough and light enough to come close. There are robotics engineers who have been working on an intensified strength suit that makes the wearer able to lift huge weights, but it is more like the yellow lifter from Aliens (movie) than an actual suit, and they are very movement restricted. Another problem would be with joint articulation. Currently there are no mechanical joints which can fit around a human form an completely follow the range of movement without having exposed gaps at the human joints. In the movies small sections overlap and/or clip from view to allow for the full range of movements, but such is not possible in the real world.

If I re-watch the movie, I'll be sure to pay extra attention. IIRC they started working on Iron Man III already. I'm guessing we'll see it next summer, or earlier.

Well, in every version she goes a bit nuts, but always with some outside factors pushing her along into pure psycho.

As a consolation prize I'll admit I've often wondered what it would be like to be able to sense, and influence other people's thoughts in the manner of Xavier :p

Wolverine has it good too... depending upon which version you go by, he is completely immortal, and was, even before the whole adamantium skeleton thing. (In this version of events, he does have amnesia every few centuries though. I guess probably when he gets his head blown off:tinfoil:)

Thanks!

Anyone else have an idea?
Also, anyone know how they lock into place? It doesn't seem like magnets.
