So here's the story: SenKat sent me a message earlier this week to let me know he's shipping me a 'surprise'. "but when you get inside the packing materials, make sure you open the obviously larger end first :p".. so I figured it was probably something somewhat large?

To my surprise, in my mail today I found a regular, thin, priority mail envelope, and even more surprising: its entire contents were a lone, tiny matchbox (small 32 count box - I normally get them at walmart in 4 packs). One side was taped shut and the other side ominously said to open it first...

At this point I was wondering if SenKat had finally got pissed and decided to try mail-bombing me. Proceeding with the utmost caution I pulled out two pairs of needle-nose tweezers and got to work opening the box. Inside was an even scarier plastic vial filled with some sort of odd white tissue. I had no idea what would happen if I pulled it out, but curiosity got the better of me and I removed the tissue, which I then realized was toilet paper (unused, I'm hoping).

Inside were 3 tiny plastic bits that looked like the things on the ends of shoelaces (I think they're called anglets?). Here's a pic of what I first saw:

So I started carrying them back to the computer to ask what they were, but on my way I passed a dim part of the hall and to my surprise they had turned different colors. Then it dawned on me! Greg had be talking about tritium lights earlier, and apparently he had sent me some mini ones. I don't really know much about them, so I'll let someone else handle the explanation but here's what they look like with the lights off:

And to top it off, in a second envelope came these:

A bunch of laser warning labels! I have no idea what to do with any of this stuff yet, but I've been fighting back the urge all day to stick these warning labels on everything I lay my eyes on.

Anyway, thanks a lot Greg! I can't say I have any idea what to do with the tritium bits, but they sure are interesting, and I know the warning labels will come in handy someday.

That was really nice of Greg!
Trinium vials, I just recently heard of them.
I think some people stick them to the crevices in their flashlights, in this case lasers, so that they can locate it in pitch darkness.

Tritium Vials are well cool, I have one encased in plastic on my keyring (blue) and they sure are bright in darkness.

Tritium is a radioactive Isotope of Hydrogen , produced in nuclear reactors. it emits high speed electrons on decay that strike a phospher coating on the inside of the glass vial , producing the glow that you see. Its a similar process that lights up the pixels on a TV or CRT monitor. Tritium has a half life of just over 12 years, which means the vial will dim to half its brightness in that time.

Tritium is also used as a fuel in Nuclear Fusion weapons to boost the yield of the blast, so you see, it is incredibly powerful stuff.

The radiation produced is harmless to humans unless digested or inhaled in large quantities, as it is Beta radiation (electrons) and is blocked by a sheet of paper or human skin.

Heh ! Glad you liked your surprise, man ! I figured I am not wealthy by any stretch of imagination, but I have some neat stuff I can share once in a while ! LOL With all the hep you've given me since we first "met" not to mention the excellent little TEC's you gave me a while back, I thought you might like some "curious" items to mess around with ! I really have no idea what I am going to do with all of these Tritium vials I have currently, I know I do plan on integrating some into my Daughter's jewelery....some of her necklaces or something, since it is so unique AND since she is a little geeklet in training ! I also am going to find some way to attach them to lasers, both the homemade ones I make, as well as my X-85 - simply because they just look cool as hell ! AND since you are really the one responsible for me being so damned broke all the time in my search for the perfect RGB laser, I figured I would at least make sure you have some RGB Tritium to play with ! ::) I know sooner or later you will find a use for both the Trits, and the stickers

Oooooooooo - Timelord - I have been looking for one of those holders like that ! I have seen them everywhere, and I will buy a few next time they show up on CPF, except from a few vendors on there that are jerks, LOL !!! I won't give them my money, simply because when asking about the Trit stuff a few months back, they were mostly nasty, and rude people, and I have no desire to buy anything from them - I am patient, I have plenty of Tritium right now, but my mind may change when I start running out ! ::)
