That is pretty cool. I cant remember the program I was watching but they had a field with thousands of mirrors that collected the light. Melted a hole through a steel plate instantly. It was on one of the science channels.:)

I would use it to fuze ceramic bricks that could be shipped all over the countries that build them and produce homes that could last for centuries and avoid the use of timber as the main source for home construction. Timber/wood could be added as comfort/accent pieces and reduce global warming, if it is in fact damaging our planet. What say you? :)

^maybe at the equator on top of a tall mountain at noon on a perfectly clear day during the earth's aphelion with AR-coated optics that passed every wavelength between 250nm and 1mm :D

... On either the Vernal or Autumnal Equinox. :p

Edit: The Earth's orbit isn't elliptical enough to make it's distance at perihelion and aphelion significantly change the radiant power of the Sun on the surface. Which is why it is still colder in the winter when the Earth is closest. Instead, the cool and hot seasons are determined on the Earth's tilt relative to the Sun (the Ecliptic IIRC)...
So the Sun is delivering more energy per square meter when it is directly overhead during the Equinoxes. :D
