Soldering does make a few little lead balls fly off and scatter on your desk. One way to skyrocket your lead levels in your body is to lay a sandwich on the desk you solder on and eat it... So uhhh, top tip, don't eat solder. :p

Lead is dangerous in small airborne particles, caused by mechanical processes, not thermal.

If it were that dangerous, nobody would solder anything :D

They are actually dangerous in large quantities. In professional soldering setups they have solder fume extractors to keep the workers safe.

I just use a giant fan to blow the fumes away so I'm not huffing them all the time, works well enough for me.

With a new tip, you have to tin it as soon
as it heats up. Otherwise it begins to
oxidize and once that happens it has to be
cleaned if it can be, or just replaced.

Oh, didn't know. Thanks for the link.

I'm also not "huffing" them, I have developed this reflex to slowly exhale through my nose when doing the solder joint, just enough to make the fumes go away so I can see what I'm doing. And so that they don't go into my face.

Also, I found that I very much like the smell in the room after/during soldering work (which would be the molten resin), is that just me? :D

I like the smell of gasoline in a shed, but I don't like solder! :)

I got some leaded solder and then decided I needed some soldering practice so got a kit which required 427 solder joints :eek:

I've just finished it - may it serve as my way of saying Merry Christmas!

I no longer fear projects requiring soldering :)
[ps. note to self: I must get some wire cutters as I had to bend the wires or cut them before soldering!]

I got a small packet (of 60/40 Rosin) from ebay: link

I'm currently getting a lot of stuff from aliexpress - so I ordered this (63/37 rosin core solder) too but won't know what it's like until it gets here but the reviews are promising: link

Does solder vary in quality? It just seems to be such a simple product that I can't understand how it can vary - ie does 63/37 rosin core solder vary? How?

Update: done some research and see Cardas quad isn't simple lead and tin but also contains silver and copper.

And, well, there's always a question if it truly is exactly 63% and 37% - you think those $1 reels from ebay got the alloy right?

Also one more thing - the flux core in it, it has to be of good quality, otherwise it just produces fumes, with no help to the actual soldering joint.

I have bought a cheap (very small) roll of 63/37 flux core solder before. I still have it somewhere. The supposedly flux core isn't in the entire length of the wire. Some parts don't have the flux core in it!!!
