Cool, please take care not to get toxic fumes inside you lungs, a small amount of the wrong stuff can wreck havoc over time.

Only fumes would be from the plastic. I'm outdoors so plenty of ventilation :)

Have you seen that application for iPhones to allow you to charge them in a microwave oven? I bet that releases some nasty chemicals into the air.

Please don't tell me you actually believe that.

Yeah amazingly I've never been tempted to put my iPhone in a microwave. High intensity EM fields really good for electronics.

Very entertaining.

I suggest you do the old microwave plasma trick. Take a thick walled glass cup, invert it, and place it on wooden or plastic supports so that it is off of the base plate and air can get in and out from under the inverted cup easily. Place a lit candle or a grape that has been sliced in half but left with a thin membrane of skin left intact between the two halves directly under the inverted cup. Nuke for a few minutes. I've used a match as well but supporting the match was more trouble than it was worth, and it would often burn out being fully vertical. Never tried the grape, but seen it done. A small tea light candle w/o the metal shell worked great.

I recommend you use a Pyrex (borosilicate) glass if you can, and do let the microwave run for more than 10sec after plasma forms, most people stop it too early, and you miss the show.

After seeing your post I had to search youtube for it, some young dudes put the plasma trick up. There were several videos on this, but looking at just a couple this one seemed to show the effect well.

Gonna try both plasma methods. Also going to try a compact fluorescent light, and later on a mercury vapor lamp.

Make sure you elevate the glass so air can get in and out, and also run it longer than 10sec. I don't know why everyone freaks out and turns off the microwave. As long as the plasma is contained it's fine. It's no more of a load to the magnetron than a huge pot of water would be. Running the microwave empty is what kills it.

Yeah I plan to let the plasma go until it melts through/shatters the bowl. Then I would stop it so it doesn't start damaging the microwave.

I wonder how hot the ball of plasma gets...
Think that plasma can giver off x rays? Perhaps I should bring my geiger counter.
