Okay, I was recently offered an NST by a member here, but don't have enough money at the time to by much at all.

You MIGHT be able to get the cfl ballast to work IF you know the frequency. It should state the frequency on the ballast but if not you need an oscilloscope to see it.

Good luck and be safe :)

What about a flyback?

At my skill (and fear) level, I try and avoid anything high volts + high amps.

I have played around with small high voltage parts from small plasma balls and EL wire drivers, but only because I know they don't have enough amps to harm me.

Its also a lack of a clean, safe area to work with high power electrical stuffs.

Yeah, I've thought about the NST for that reason to. One reason I'm not sure if I want one is because with the flyback, you probably get a second chance (5-10ma), maybe with the NST, but it's a bit more risky.

I don't know where you got that figure, but it really depends on how you drive the flyback, and which one. They can potentially do 40mA or more.

Okay, makes sense, I think I just read that somewhere.

USAbro I just told you in another thread that unless you physically measure the output of a flyback, you have no idea what it is outputting. No1 rule of hobbyist flyback use!

I've got a battery powered royer driven flyback unit on my shelf that puts out over 500mA and WILL KILL YOU, yet looks identical to a single ended driven unit which puts out about 7mA which will only wake you up abruptly.
