I love music, especially progressive! My favorite bands are Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Tool. I like epic songs; they generally have to be over 6 minutes. Does anyone have any suggestions for other bands (specific songs especially) which I would like?

Here are my favorite songs by all 4 bands.

nick you should know that there are fellow metal enthusiats here. i dont mind rush but i love tool. slipknot is my favorite by far though... rap and r&b i cant stand on the other hand... its either about sex or drugs(selling or doing) or killing/beating some one... cant rap artists think of something productive to do with their time...? :-?

lets not mention the sampling they do or actually having their songs written by someone else so all they have to do is sing a song either.... ::)

Hmmmmm here is some of the stuff I like, you might also like too. However I have a slightly different taste.
A Toast to Bad Taste- Far-Less

The Flame in All of us- Thousand Foot Krutch

Spy Hunter - Project 86

The Feel Good Drag - Anberlin

Enter Sandman - Metallica

Life is Beautiful - Sixx:AM

That's about as heavy as my taste gets.

Yea, have fun with those.

I listen to rap too, people just always stereotype 50 cent and Soulja Boy as all rap... Try listening to something like

Vato - Snoop Dogg
A Beatiful Mine - Aceyalone and Rjd2

Sure, rap is mostly about Drugs sex and violence, but some of it is okay.

More into thrash metal myself, but I think I can help you out.

OK, you like epic songs, so you'll pretty much be stuck to Power Metal. Modern progressive has, well, progressed far beyond Rush and Yes.

So, epic Power Metal. Not really my taste, but I'll help you out. Check out the following bands.

My favorites of the genre:
Falconer
Iced Earth

Other notables:
Helloween
Blind Guardian
Hammerfall
Sonota Arctica
Ensiferium
Man O War
Angel Dust

That should be enough to keep you busy for a while. Let me know when you want to give thrash or death a try.

P.S. If a band is played at Hot Topic in the mall, it's probably not metal ;D i.e. Slipknot

Progressive isn't about who can hit the fastest solo, or smash the drums the hardest. Most "progressive" metal is really only a selling label; it's lost the element which started prog in the first place. The reason I like Tool is because they are not trying to copy anybody; they just play the way they want to and essentially say, "If you don't like this style, screw you. I'm going to do it anyway." It's not about the heavy element so much; Lateralus is (in my opinion) by far their best album because of the odd time signatures and meter.

Progressive has not "progressed" beyond Rush and Yes; they are the ones who knew and understood the genre. The epic suites and the combination of rock elements like a symphony are what defined progressive rock, and still do. "Progressive" metal, for the most part, is a way to sell a band. It's not for real, it sends out messages of "false" for miles. I hate it.

If nobody else knows what I'm talking about, then never mind.

I understand what you mean by progressive. What I'm saying is that progressive metal has progressed to a much more aggressive and hard style then it began with Yes and Rush. I know where you are coming from.

Power Metal is a derivative of progressive metal. The vocals are more operatic, but the underlying fusion of sounds are still there.

I guess I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for. Do you want bands with unique styles and fail to conform to genre? Then check out somebody like Volbeat. I absolutely love them. They are a fusion of country and metal. They blend it together so wonderfully that it's scary how well the 2 go together. Just give the song 1 minute until you stop it.

If you are looking for bands that are officially classified as "progressive metal", then it may be heavier then you tastes. Symphony X rocks amazingly well and is one of the more prominent progressive metal bands out. I love them!

If you want operatic vocals that transcend the metal genre and an absolutely epic feel, check out power metal. My personal favorite would be Iced Earth.

Once I know more of what you are looking for, I'd be more then happy to help you out!

I used to only listen to power metal, but I've started to listen to some "softer" metal/hard rock, often older, like Iron Maiden.

My favorite band will still be Sonata Arctica though, and I've just discovered Dream Theater too. I never listened to metal when I was younger, because I somehow believed it to be "bad". So I'm relatively fresh in the genre, since I started to listen to it in my early teens (I'm 19 in less than a month, btw).

My Pandora tab stays on this station pretty much all the time. It ends up playing quite a bit of Rush, a lot of Zeppelin, and quite a bit more classic rock than progressive. I really enjoy it. It's not exactly what you're looking for as far as new music I don't think, but you should try out Pandora for finding new music if you haven't already. I bet you have already but I'm writing this just in case.

You can put in all those things you like, seed it with specific bands, songs, etc, then flag songs it plays as like and don't like, and I'm sure it'll come up with a few new songs you'll like. I find it quite enjoyable.

Anyway, this is the station I stick to. You can can find tons of stations out there, and of course make your own stations.

Classic Rock/Progressive
Edit your station name:
created by: Mr Mojo Risin. Nah, that was Jim Morrison.

Old School Classic and Progressive Rock inspires this station with artists like Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow and Cream used as seeds. Awesome guitar and classic lyrics.
