I made this in 2009

And I made this in 2010

I really got into spud guns my late highschool early college days. They aren't perfect that's for sure but they were a ton of fun.

Let's talk about spud guns for a bit :)

EDIT: Also don't need to hear about safety, we did what we did, but we were on 10X alert when the kids were around and safety precautions were taken.

I made several spud guns back in the day....Before 9/11. You know those things have been made illegal by FEDERAL law now, right?

I wouldn't want you to get it trouble. I know for a fact that it's a felony to build or own a potato gun in Texas.

It's not wonder I found lasers...

Those can shoot eggs no problem, it all about how well you make your sabot. We've shot raw eggs are some pretty high speeds using only some well positioned paper towels. If then eggs are hard boiled, well then it really doesn't matter.

Ugh that sig...

@scumbagathiest

I haven't checked laws recently since I got out of building them after that last one in 2010. At the time I remember trying to keep everything legal, and even when/if we were doing "illegal" shooting we always did it in big areas where no one cared.

We used to try to shove EVERYTHING into sabots and shoot them through our spud guns.

You should have seen the 2-liter dry ice breech, 2 meter long, iron-pipe barrel spud gun my buddy made! It was a truck-mounted unit, and we clocked one potato at well over 1/2 mile!

It's amazing we never got arrested back then.

Damn, that's some serious distance especially for potato ammo. We once tried pouring about a quart of gasoline in front of a tennis ball sabot and put an flame stick at the end of the barrel. Result was an awesome fireball the size of a sedan about 10ft past the barrel.

He didn't have any lasers. Which brings me to a possible next project...a laser guided roomba or canister powerhead. I have an 8 LED array that I want to convert to mini-modules I got from hak @ 1mW each!

I've made several combustion potato guns in the past, I had a bit of an obsession with them when I was in middle school. :D I may have to dust off the old guns for the fourth of July this year!

A cool trick is to attach a piece of steel wool to the end of the projectile that you are launching. It makes a tracer effect and leaves a trail of sparks in the path that it travels!

I'm pretty sure than spud guns are completely legal in the US amusing that you don't do anything stupid with them. There is even a wiki article on the ordeal: Spud gun legality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
