Frak, speaking of fiberglass, I was cutting some up yesterday, and, being a stupid college kid, I decided I should wear a T-shirt and no mask... I was covered in the crap and my whole body hurt. -.-

As a former hardworkin' guy who has done a lot of those things and I'm still living (sort of) to tell about it, DON'T !
:twak:
Get the proper safety equipment for the situation.
If your employer gives you any resistance to providing it then do this ; Go get a complete medical physical immediately. Get the results for your own files too. Make copies of all MSDS for all the products you are being exposed to. OSHA documents are also helpful.
Then in 10-15 years when you start to notice the beginning of your ongoing health issues you will have documentation to go back after the employer for help in paying for your growing bills.
And your diminished abilities that limit your chances to get and keep a good paying job will be offset a bit.
The health issues will increase and start to complicate each other and many things you aren't even able to think of yet. The respiratory damage will mean that you can't play sports, or enjoy a lot of recreational activities. (Nobody has sex past 45 do they ?)
The wheezing and coughing will become second nature and after a while you won't even notice how often you wake up at night choking.
Slight nerve damage can be fun and entertaining. People can be fooled into thinking that you are a real hardass because you don't flinch from candle flames when they are burning you.
The build up of particulates in your eyes will be so gradual that you will never notice how your vision deteriorates. Besides there won't be anything new to see when your 60 anyways. There should be some new technology that corrects your problems too. And with the medical bills being paid by your employer it won't cost you much so don't worry.

BTW. The next "issue" I can expect from my 3 years as an auto painter is liver failure. I'm sure my 2 yr old son is looking forward to his daddy going through that.

I see a lot of paramedics and EMTs who think they're too cool to wear gloves and other personal protective equipment on calls.
EMTs get comfortable after a year and think they are seasoned professionals who don't need to wear gloves because they know what they're doing.

Not me though. I wear gloves on every call and put a mask on myself and my patient if i suspect they have some sort of communicable disease.

I also see a lot of people trying to look tough and lift loads wayyyy too heavy for 1, or even 2 people.
These 400lb people that call us at 2am and need to be lifted up or transported to a hospital because they can't fit in a car.
I know my limits and I don't dare even get close to them. I'll have local fire departments respond and help lift without thinking twice. Some people think that's rude or embarrassing to my patient, but i'm not going to let their lack of self control ruin my career and personal health.

Some might think i'm too cautious, but i'll be the one still working in this profession 30 years from now while everyone else I work with today who ignores these risks will have Hep C or ruptured discs in their back.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your medical problems! Hope everything is under control! You have many VERY excellent points and advice there! I will definitely keep those in mind.

On the other hand not many of those will help me at my current job. I work for the federal government and we manufactur mainly high explosive projectiles and practice rounds.

Anyway I don't think any amount of medical records would get very far in court for many reasons. Firstly the federal government has alot of "friends" and here where I work the owners are old school Mafia. There are public records accessible at our Local library that back those large claims up. Now another reason is, my state is probably one of the most corrupt places in the US. Definitely top 5, most likely not #1 but its up there. The judicial chain here I believe is so deep rooted with corruption it would be practically impossible to win VS the Mafia & federal government. I'm no lawyer but it seems impractical at least to even try.

So I am better off leaving the government do what they do and just go with the flow. I suggest anyone else follow your suggestions though :)

You might want to reconsider.
I never did the first medical exam. I could never prove that I was healthy to begin with. Everything that happens as a result is my own problem.(and expense.)
Get that physical assessment done now.
In 20 years you will have it to fall back on. If you aren't working for the Government anymore it would be easy to file some sort of lawsuit to recoup for damages. -Lots of lawyers will start to drool if you bring this to them. Nothing better than a lawsuit against the Government. Huge settlements and great fees.
The time delay will make for lots of changes in the current "situation". And when you are older and you get a lawyer involved they are the "face" of the legal procedings, not you. They are required to not disclose who you are.
And you don't have to file in your own town even. You could start actions from anywhere. A federal case could be started in Alaska. The medical evidence showing the degeneration of your condition in ways consistent with those as outlined by the safety hazards documents is irrefutable. With the right documentation it would be an open & shut case that probably wouldn't even need to go to trial. Just one of those quiet settlements that nobody hears about.
But that's all conjecture...It's a worst case scenario.
There is a good chance things will never go that far.
But to keep your options open and cover yourself you might consider getting the exam anyways. Get copies of the results for yourself and forget about it until you need it if you ever do. Otherwise they are just a few pieces of paper in your files.
It's a case of little to lose, lots to gain.

Just my wary opinion.
-It looks like I might not suffer complete liver failure too. Just damaged and not working well. I can't afford to drink anyways.

Jesus Christ.

So a man can actually get so damn fat, he can't fit into a CAR?!

How do you start that conversation?

Speaking of ignoring some safety measures, at our tranining sessions of Kenjutsu, we're having full contact sparring with polypropylene bokkens with no safety gear except some protection gloves. Surprisingly, the most common place you're getting hit with a katana are your fingers. And it hurts. Actually it's a pretty good motivation to learn the proper defense tecniques I guess :p

Some services are even installing mechanical winches in their ambulances to lift these people. It's getting ridiculous.

Mechanical winches? Lifting what? As in, what do the normal people use?

How on Earth do you get that fat? Taking pure FAT intraveinously?

I don't eat anything particulary healthy, just what's on the menu at the restaurants, and I don't pay any bit of attention to my chalories intake, especially at weekends when I'm at home enjoying home kitchen, and I consider myself "fit".

What's wrong with those people?

Being employed by the US military I am required to use all of the proper PPE for every chemical and situation.

We have to wear leather gloves and a face shield when checking tire pressure

it's America. fattest country in the world.

our stretchers are made for 750lb capacity. although i've seen people so big on it that it bends in the ambulance when we hit a bump.

I moved one woman who was in her thirties and in a nursing home because she was >400lbs and could not take care of herself.
We used 6 people to put her onto the cot and lift it. we had to leaving the hand rails down because she was twice as wide as the cot.

when we got her to the nursing home the first thing she asked was when dinner was. I wanted to punch her in the face.

I keep trying to get my boss to charge extra for obese patients. It's much more work for us and therefore should be billed as such.

what really makes me mad is seeing fat parent have fat little kids. i just think about what eating habits they are teaching them at such a young age.
now im not super fit , im a little overweight but people that obese don't think can blame it on anyone but themselves

You're doing just fine man, the right way:)! Way too cool is just waaayyy too STUPID and putting yourself at great risk. Standard procedures are a requirement and PPE is no joke. The "way too cool" need to be terminated. If they don't care about themselves what else is being ignored?
