Ok, I don't really like politics... but since the US is having presidential elections coming up, its likely inevitable that people are going to talk about it.  And, I've seen some threads already contaminated with this viral discussion (Igor's lens GB), so if we want to do it, do it here  ;D

Oh, and just found this today...  one reason I really don't like politics, there are some CRAZY people out there:

Lol... that man fails at life.

Me, I support neither. Obama has no idea how the military works, and is gonna try to socialize healthcare... McCain really doesn't know what he's talking about, and is just out there to make Obama look bad.

My opinions of both candidates went down even more after the debate. It wasn't a political debate, it was a "let's convince the general public that the other candidate's a moron!" debate. Apparently neither one can give a straight answer, either.

Remember... lesser of 2 evils is still evil. Vote Libertarian '08. :D

The problem with politics is that no one follows politics. Obama says McCain does this or that and McCain says Obama does this or that. The problem is that the motivations of these individuals is a compilation of the circumstances surrounding whatever decision they are being derided over. Each camp makes broad accusations and when the candidates try to explain the rationale for their decision no one listens primarily due to short attention spans. Voters, in general, simply hitch their wagons to whatever broad statement suits them with absolutely no regard for the truth. How many people look up the voting records of their politicians? None right? You can see it all just by going to the house or senate websites. How many people ask their politicians to justify why they made a particular decision? None right? Well as your representative they are required to justify it to you. How many people really understand what their political party really stands for? None right?

I'm a bastard child of the Republican party. I am a Constitutionalist believing federal power is derived from the Constitution but also limited by the Constitution. The federal government is not allowed to do more than what is written in our founding documents. I believe the interpretation of the Constitution should be as narrow and conservative as possible. As a living document, if something is so important as to expand the government then it should be added as an amendment, but not until. Because an amendment is so important, it will bring national debate. It prevents any branch of government from silently usurping power without a mandate from the people.

I am fiscally and militarily ultraconservative yet I'm socially moderate. I miss the days of Ronald Reagan. Why? Ronald Reagan was a very unique individual when it comes to presidents. He was the only president, if my memory serves me, to be both a Democrat and a Republican. He grew up and worked as a Democrat but entered politics as Republican after a major shift in how he saw the world. For him, the Democratic party failed him. What I respect about Ronald Reagan is that he was a man of his word. He had the character and integrity to pursue his beliefs. He said what he was going to do and he did it. He was so honorable in his actions that both parties in congress respected him. You may or may not like his politics but no one could deny his character. That is what attracted so many people to him.

We need another president who has the honor, integrity and character of Ronald Reagan. I don't even care what party he or she comes from just that they lead our country. I'm not talking about the prize of getting elected. That's what the two bafoons up for president are doing now. They are both running toward the prize. They are not thinking about the four years after winning where they are responsible to the American people, where the decisions they make could bring the demise of the country. When did the position of president become just another notch in the political belt?

I agree.  Personally, I guess you could call me politically ignorant since I really don't know much about anything political aside from what I get from the media (as most do).  But, I KNOW I am and so, I hate debating or even really talking politics because I KNOW I don't know what I'm talking about, lol.  Yeah, that shouldn't be the case; I would say I'm reasonably intelligent and I should be capable of forming my own opinions (and decisions) on this matter, but with everything else I'm doing in my life, I just don't get very motivated about it since I have a lot of other things to focus on.

However, with the knowledge that I do have and coming back to agreeing with you, I personally feel that both candidates are not what we need and not what I want.  I really have felt that way from the start, but even more so now.  I'll have a hard time deciding...

Now, here's my write-in:

Honestly I don't care who wins anymore :-/
McCain will just slow the decay and Obama will completely wreck the country in 4 short years with his socialist programs. Either way the country is screwed. The recent $700 bailout alone will end up costing every man, woman and child $2,000 and the all knowing deciders tell us that it's in our best interest to bail out the incompetent fatcats who made poor business choices. Meanwhile Afghanistan is falling back into chaos and the terrorists are getting stronger every day. Sure the surge in Iraq is producing positive results, but we shouldn't even be there in the first place.

I think everybody posting here has voiced their opinion. Please don't discount their statements in favor of yours. I find your opinion actually very hollow. You make broad and sweeping comments about voting for a Republican. I'm a Republican but if you voted for me I an assure you I would not be George Bush so such a statement is false. I'm not discounting your opinion, I'm simply suggesting that without any kind of justification of your position your statements don't mean much. If you have a position, add some teeth to it by providing some evidence. If you think Obama would be better than McCain then explain why that is the case. I think one of the most dangerous positions to have is that of a false dilemma. Being totally polarized eliminates the reality of governmental interaction. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Pointing fingers at one person may feel good but action by our government is a team sport.

One of my favorite arguments is how the President lied to Congress about Iraq. The president can lie through his teeth but the intelligence committees of both houses received the same intelligence briefs. That information is not filtered through the White House and then distributed to Congress. Congress sees the same raw intelligence from the CIA, NSA, Joint Chiefs, Defense Secretary, NRO, and other agencies. So who was playing who for chumps? Did the president really lie to Congress? Did Congress agree regarding the intelligence? Is there some powerful lobby spinning the facts to the American people? These are the questions one must delve into before making a sweeping generalization not only for my example but for all your opinions. Then you can be sure any statements you make have substance as you can now back them up.

This is the basis for real critical thinking. It's something difficult to find in the American populace as it is not something taught in American schools except as an elective in college or a course or two on the path to a philosophy degree.
