Yay!  Obama won!  I'm really happy.  I think our country will improve a lot for the better.

Eh, we'll see. Things are going to suck for the next few years no matter who is president. By the looks of many indicators, we're teetering on the verge of a big recession. No matter who got elected, they were going to have a terrible job ahead of them. Obama won, so hopefully he makes the best of it. I'm thanking my lucky stars the democrats didn't get the supermajority in the senate (Not becuase it's the democrats, I am honestly scared of ANY party having the presidency, majority in the house, and supermajority in the senate at the same time, they can pass anything they want if that happens).

But democrats have been complaining for years. They have the presidency and both houses of congress, let's see if they can do anything now that their dreams have come true, it's time for them to put up or shut up, let's see them do something rather than talk about how the republicans jsut hold everything up.

But really, don't expect everything to just get better and for him to lead us in a great new direction. There's really no way for us to avoid a ton of hardship in the next few years. I can honestly see the economy going terribly the next 4 years and Obama getting voted out no matter how good a job he actually does. People in power in bad times get voted out (see republicans in power over the last 2 elections), even if the problems weren't their fault.

I hope he's a great president and everything goes very well, but I'm buckling my seatbelt for the next few years.

Kinda off topic (and joke) but if the US has economy problems, does that mean that us, the rest of the world are gonna get richer? ;D

(pretending you're serious)

I'm certainly no expert, but in my thinking, no.  The US is a huge consumer of everything, and a huge importer of everything.  It's the engine bringing in all the stuff and sending out all the money (well, very big portions).  By my reckoning, if the biggest consumer in the world stops consuming, then the sellers lose as well because there are fewer people out there to buy their stuff.  Many countries are rich and where they are today due to the consumerism of the 1st world pouring cash/trade into the companies that make the things.  China and India are getting rich off of US/1st world dollars/pounds/euros/whatever being sent over there for cheaper goods and cheaper labor.  If the money from the 1st world dries up, many countries will suffer greatly.

Didn't the US economic problems over the past year foreshadow the losses on all the other major markets that have happened more recently?  Correlation is not causation, but the markets of other countries did seem to "follow" the US economy down the tubes.

No.

when the economic "crisis" of 1930 happened, argentina played a good role on exporting cereals & other foodz but this era is the communication/information era, US does so much stuff and has one of the most powerful currencies in the world that if it falls, everything's going down with it..

pretty much no matter what president there is, theyre not gonna be any better and not much "change" will be made. the president doesnt even have power to do half the things they say ::) education for instance is a state power. president has no say

The last time the US economy was in a comparable slump was when Clinton was in. He had nothing to do with the positive change (financially / morally), he just happened to be 'in charge' during the .com revolution. If drastic changes for the better are to ocour, there must be another leap. Maybe something along the lines of an American discovery in alternative fuels or heavy funding and serious work in zero point energy. Conspiracy nuts may be onto something, but the world will never know if its not approached with an open mind and lots and lots of money. If you put the cash and resources that have been put into war, into something positive...you never know.

But at least for now, the social aspect of things will more than likely change for the better. I am only a spectator / neighbour to the US, and it would be nice to see the people benefit as a whole.

Small business owners are only taxed if they make (individually) $250,000 a year...in which case, the taxes won't really be a problem...

You got that right....I own my own business - sole proprietorship. Every year up until this year my business had been getting better and better, and I had hope to hire an assistant. But that dream is dashed, and my whole business will likely go down the toilet in the next 4 years.

Obama promised to put small business owners out of business - I pray he won't/can't make good on that promise. I didn't think things would be peaches and cream under McCain but under Obama we will likely enter the worst economic depression since the early 1930's. And yes, if the US crashes so will the rest of the world. I've been lucky so far in that I can sell to people outside the US and still make a living.....but that source of cash may well be gone soon.... :'(

The only upside is this: in the late 70's this nation suffered under Jimmy Carter and his disastrous economic plans (gas shortages and gas lines, anyone? Remember runaway inflation?), but then we got the glory years of Ronald Reagan. We can hope for another Reagan in 2012 after 4 years of Jimmy Carter the 2nd.
