Great now we will be sending them more money, again, to play nice. Eventhough, China and Russia also fund them and provide weapons+tech. Same thing they do with the middle east countries. Its a 3 tier world. The U.N is slowly trying to create a one world government, but Russia and China refuse. China is now trying to gold back their currency so that the Dollar dies. The US tries to stay in the middle of everything so that the Dollar stays the mode for oil purchase or trade across the world. Russia provides what ever will help degrade the others ability to be number one. I hope that the US does not allow the pass of the U.N. Gun Ban Treaty. I do not want UN troops walking my streets and searching my family and its home!

Did it actually get high enough to put something into orbit? Or did it just goof around at 100,000 feet? Because the latter is what more easily confirms "missile" like behavior.

It seems that they have managed to place a sattelite into an orbit of rougly 500 km altitude, although the function of that sat is unknown so far. It could just be a test launch, launching nothing more than a beacon or repeater. Sort of a 60 year late sputnik copy?

There seems no mention of the mass of that sat either, which is actually the interesting part of all of this.

Any mass you can launch into LEO, you can deliver anywhere on earth with the same launch system, and usually a fair bit more. A satellite can be anything from a kilogram to several tonnes, the latter being sufficient mass for a nuclear weapon.

I suppose the main worry is if such a system could deliver a nuclear, chemical or dirty bomb onto US soil. Perhaps it is able to do so, but then again there are missile defense systems in place that can knock it down before it even flies over land.

US would just blow it out of the sky before it ever got close enough to do anything.

Hah! The rocket was launched the December 12th, 2012 (12/12/12) ... the 52nd birthday of the He-Ne laser.

Also the death of their dear leader Kim Jong-il. I fully expect more activity next year Jan/Feb. Could get very interesting.

I want you to pause a moment and think from the DPRK's perspective on
their rocket launch.

Are we being told the full story by our news outlets... no way.
The situation here on the peninsula is very tense because of the new sanctions.
Trigger fingers are getting itchy.

Why doesn't the DPRK hierarchy just paint a Target on their
backs...
From what I've heard in the news lately I hear a lot of bark
but not much bite from the DPRK..

Well, I was here when North Korea launched an attack against South Korea. Just about blew up into a full scale war during the first hour. North Korea set a bunch of MIGs across the DMZ to pound the South Korean counter attack shortly after over 100 shells landed on the island. The MIGs were intercepted by KF-16s and turned back and went back across into North airspace. Had the MIGs been shot down..... I don't want to think about the consequences.

That memory is fresh in my mind. I remember it like yesterday.
I was working with a lady who's son just about died that day. He was stationed on Yongpyeong-do. He lost his best friend in the attack.
