I'm gonna be getting a nerve block June 22 in Ottawa and was just wondering if anyone here has gotten on or knows anyone who has gotten one. What can I expect during the procedure and after the procedure?

I have RSD (CRPS) RSD - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy steaming from a broken foot and soft tissue tear from back in August of 2010.

To sum it what, what can I expect during/after the procedure? How much does it hurt?

I cant offer first hand experience, but from one of your own links, is a forum....maybe there would be a better place to ask?

The last post is from over 1 year ago. Not many people have the condition I have. Just annoying because I want to get back to my jiu jitsu, been close to a year. Injury is not jiu jitsu related.

I've had 5 surgeries on on feet over the past 6 years and got nerve blocks for each one. What they did to me is insert a needle about 6 inches above my knee but in the hamstring area. Sometimes in more than one place (front, back, sides). They inject I think a novacaine (numbing) type solution around the nerve.

It last anywhere from 12-36 hours depending on what, and how much numbing solution.

If they have a student with them insist on the M.D. doing it. I had a student hit my nerve with the needle more than once. That'll make jump off the table.

Nerve block is FAR BETTER on the body than General Anesthesia, but the effects can linger for a few days.

Best of luck with your surgery.

So Nerve Blocks don't hurt too much if done right? There are different types of Nerve Blocks and the one I will be getting suppose to last around a month. I think they're putting it in my back

Not getting surgery, it's for RSD. I'm getting it so I can get over the hump in Physio because right now it is impossible and its been almost a year since I walked.

Thanks for the input guys.

I shattered my ankle 18 months ago and have had 2 surgeries and had nerve blocks done on both and they don't hurt that bad. They do not hurt as bad as injections that I have had in my neck for bulged disks, they really hurt compared to the ones you will have for your foot. If you are really nervous about it let the doc know and he might give you some Valium or something along that line.

Good luck!
