I've been very exited about the upcoming release of portal 2, so much so that i started a little project.
Turret.jpg

Thats right, I am making a fully functional (minus the guns and as much as it pains me to say, the laser) portal turret. It is an interesting engineering challenge taking something with almost no information and was never intended to work in the real world, and making it work in the real world.

first up:
the "EYE"
In portal 2, the eye is made up of many lines the light up in an animated fashion. to make the lens of the eye I started by etching the lines in acrylic and made a crude LED ring to go around it. I used a shift register for the animation. With the clock it works as one input so it operates the same as tying the pins together, except instead of a simple on or off you get the animation.

the crude ring was not suitable for a permanent solution. In order to create a longer lasting eye i drilled 8 holes into a 2in pvc pipe fitting. Some other pieces of pipe i scrounged out of the garage made a perfect fit for the high speed camera.

the camera is an IMPERX vga210L
the camera is 640 X 480 at 210 fps with maximum frame rate of 3000fps

The camera was once used on my school's D.A.R.P.A. car as a sort of optical mouse for the car. the camera pointed down and told the car how fast it was going and in which direction.

Thats all i have for now, i will keep this thread updated as the project progresses.

Freaking awesome project. Very well done on the eye - what are your candidate materials for the shell?

Jerry, yes, that hilarious video is exactly what he's building. :D

the camera will be used for object tracking. as for the shell, it will be made of fiber glass with reinforcing material where needed.
:thanks:
