Re: Signup: LPF Secret Santa! -2 Weeks-

i think we should sort out the gifts, more or less.
make two groups, groups $20-50( or what ever) and another group $10-25( or whatever)
and pick inside of the groups randomly.

I've got my secret santa shopping done. Will be ~$40, so i'll have to be in the 25-50 range.
assuming i don't keep the gift, cause I think it's pretty damn awesome, but i'm kinda a nerd..

Moh, the limit is 15-25$. Now you are probably thinking about the pill which was just to get an idea as to what you guys wanted to send out. I choose to lower the 50$ limit to 25$ so some more people didn't have to break bank to get in or feel bad because they could only send out a 20$ gift and get a 50$ gift in return.

Personally I don't mind if you guys send out something more than the 25$ limit but some members feel that's too much for this kind of thing. Also having a limit helps you think really hard about what to get someone as a gift. I can't control what you guys pay for stuff so its beyond my control if you choose to send out something expensive. The only thing I ask is to make sure that's exactly what you want to do.... last thing I want is a fight here over who got the better gift. I would really like to have another one next year but I can't if you all don't behave :p

BTW ARGLaser: I hope that didn't come across wrong! I'd be happy to have you as a secret santa and vice versa - I was just lamenting the fact that if we're sticking to our own countries, and there's only a couple Canadians, it blows that whole surprise aspect - which I think is 95% of the fun here!

Yeah, it didn't come across wrong :p

I agree that there wouldn't be much surprise if we stuck to our own countries.

Bump!

On a side note. I will see if I can mix up things a "little" to you people who don't mind to ship international. That is.... if its okay with everyone? Its kind of like throwing a wrench into the game

As of right now we will stick to the original plan and stay in the same countries. I will keep everyone up to date!

Some people in the US said they can ship internationally, so it would be possible to mix it up!

I'm going to wait until I know who I am shopping for before I buy a gift so I can research that person, and choose wisely in an effort that they get something from me that they will enjoy/use/appreciate.

I know those people offered to ship international but they are being beyond kind doing so. I would rather not abuse that if you understand. If somebody offers then that is a different story. So before I make changes I want to make sure everyone is OK with it and those who aren't don't have to be a part.

Again thanks to all who have signed up so far. It is not me who is making this happen. It is you guys! Every person who joins just makes this event bigger and better! Cheers to you all!

Just to put this in perspective as far as the US-to-Canada shipping goes, it looks like a small flat rate box is about $5 more to send to Canada than it is to keep it within the US.

When we're spending $25 on a gift, I'm really not sure how an extra $5 changes the balance so imensely? But I suppose it's not me spending that $5.

So why not just say "If you get an international recipient, you can spend $5 less on the gift" - and then do away with all this complexity? As one of the 4 or 5 actual international participants, I'd be fine with a $5 less valuable gift, if it meant being a part of the whole deal, and not relegated to our own sub-group ;)

I think the notion of getting something special, from a far off part of the world, is what most of the fun here is. International really shipping doesn't cost much these days. I don't even differentiate with shipping prices when I'm selling items anymore - so I don't understand why it's such a hurdle for this secret Santa?

I'm cool with shipping to Canada at least. I'm just not sure how much more involved it is to go beyond that.

Re: Signup: LPF Secret Santa! -2 Weeks-

The problem is tracked shipping.

I for one would like to make sure that the gift I send out gets to where I send it.

AFAIK the cheapest option for sending to Canada with point to point tracking is via EMS Express which is ~$25. To Germany and China it's $35.

I wouldn't mind spending that, if the overall gift was more expensive, but spending $25 to ship a $25 gift just doesn't make sense to me.

I haven't decided what to send out... will probably put that off until I know who I'm sending a gift to... but my plan is to get something in the $25 range and pay for priority with delivery confirmation.

I've never had a packages get lost, unless it was coming from China. It's way to much to go with tracked options for shipping

Unfortunately I have. On more than one occasion:(

It screwed me majorly once, so since than I pay the extra for tracking.
