Did you not read my post... it is very much waterproof, i can sit mine in water for 30 minutes with no air bubbles leaking from it, all that needs to be done is seal around the glass lense with glue.

And it wouldnt matter if the lithiums were protected or not, they still would start smoking and stuff.

yea, but if unprotected litiums are dropped in water, they short out. when unprotected lithiums short out, you gotta get outa the place!!! of course, little drops wont matter much, but if its submerged, it could get ugly.

but yea, MXDL factory does a good job sealing the vulnerable places, its just the glass on the end and the retaining ring that need to be sealed by you.

Thats what i used to seal the glass lens, it works perfectly fine.

I forgot about protected batteries having short-circuit protection, so if they were protected it would give you about 30 sec more to get as far away as possible, then by then the water would of leaked inside and got to the lithium and your batteries and anything within a 3 foot range are probably toast.

yeah that would be bad 7.2 volt of electricity shorted.

no, 7.2 volts doesnt matter. heck, volts dont matter. most of the time amps matter, but even that doesnt matter here.

we are talking lithium. the lithium in the 3.6v batteries hare very reactive. if you short out the batteries, (and they are not protected) the batteries will vent (AKA explode)

if you have no Idea what I am talking about, go somewhere where there is not much around (like a HUGE blacktop with no cars or anything) put a gas stove, turn it on, and drop a few lithiums in there, oh, and dont forget to RUN!!!

And here is a picture of the throw, notice how theres is no dark spot at all.

Also i had to decrease the brightness a ton, this thing is way to bright to normally see on a camera :)

Ive sucessfully completed this mod. Took me a while as i had a MXDL housing and it went missing. I then had to order another one while i waited for the back ordered voltage thing to arrive. It works sweet. My main problems were getting the damn wire to solder to the emitter terminals! I got that done and this torch is bright!! The only concern is the dark spot in the middle so ill try a couple of the fixes that people have tried.

Anyway, i want to know. Is there another even brighter mod that can be achieved on the MXDL? If so what parts are needed.

I was just reading this thread and I hear that unprotected batteries are a bad idea, but just what will happen if i dont use the protected ones and how do I know if the batteries have protection? What shouldnt i do with non protected batteries?
thanks.

Unprotected LI-IONS are bad because they can explode in flames if overcharged or shorted and they won't charge at all if you drain them completely.
Usually protected cells say something about it on the side.
Here are some good protected cells and a charger.

Here is a picture showing the protection circuit in one of the above batteries.
