Default Re: MXDL mod for Super Bright Flashlight!

It looks like I'm pulling 1 ohm from the case to the negative lead, but I'm still losing voltage across the positive and negative leads. I've got the Q5 led soldered to the two leads, and have ensured that it's a good connection. I'm pretty sure that my problem is with grounding the outer ring. In the instructions, it seems like the wire is just pressed between the controller and the case, and then soldered to the outer ring. Is that right? There is a distinct change in voltage with/without the ground, but with the ground I'm getting nothing.

Sounds like your not getting it grounded good. Should be a continuous connection from the case to the negative wire. Is your pinched wire soldered to the outer ring?

I've managed to run the circuit with a battery housing, and I'm getting 6V throughout the circuit, but when I assemble the flashlight, I get nothing. What do you mean when you say that the connection should be continuous from the case to the negative wire. I have the red and black wires from the controller soldered to +/- on the Q5 emitter. The pinched wire is only about 1/8" long and goes from the outer ring to the metal housing. Does this sound correct?

I have an extra one of those 5 mode drivers. I took my ohms meter, with the setting to just check 'open or close' Meaning, a wire, or connection is continuos, or not. I can touch one lead on the outer ring, and the other lead on the negative wire, and I get the 'tone'. Closed. So, without any power or even batteries, test the continuity between the outer case of the MXDL, and the negative lead. This will tell you if you have a good ground at the circuit board...

I checked the continuity and I get a continuous signal from the outer ring to the black wire. The weird thing is that I still get a continuous signal if it is not grounded. But, it is not continuous from the outer ring to the red wire. Can you think of anywhere else there might be a problem?

You should not be getting a continuous signal to the red, so that's fine. I still think you are not grounding the ring to the MXDL case good enough. After you press the board in place, and screw the threaded holder into the MXDL body. Check the continuity again. This time, from the MXDL body, to the negative wire. This will tell you if you have it grounded good...

Alright, it turns out that in the process of soldering the ground, the red wire pulled out of the controller board. After re-soldering it the flashlight worked great. Good thing since I ordered five of them. Anyways, thanks a lot for your help and patience. Oh, and the mod is awesome after you get it working. Thanks again.

Looks like all you need jamilm9.

Also i got that one reflector i was hoping to try out and am amazed, it made the hotspot slightly smaller, took away that donut hole, and its much brighter for some reason. This is a very simple mod to do, just glue the reflector onto the led star and then insulate the solder so it doesnt short circuit, then just glue that reflector right on. It is quite small but it works perfectly fine.

Ill take some pics later, how i did the mod and before and after it.

When i tested mine it was almost waterproof, the glass lense in the top is what you need to fix, just simply glue it all around the edge of it, after i did that i can sit it in around 2 feet of water and it doesn't leak at all.

I wouldn't count on that. be sure to secure the glass on top, and the screw on thing that holds the glass down. Lithiums + water = bad idea. especially if they are unprotected.
