Hey everyone!

So I was thinking since Christmas is around the corner and all. What if we all pitched in and had a BIG Secret Santa exchange?! You may think this is a little early.... but better now then in December when the postal services slow down!

Since this is more of a "trust" thing only reputable members will only be allowed to join.

My suggestion is we take a list of people interested in participating. We can then make a closing date which will mean you will not get anything.

Before I get into huge details.... I want to get a feel for this and opinions on how you all would like it to work. Personaly I think this is a GREAT idea and it will make some people VERY happy! I would gladly trade a laser I am not using for something UNKNOWN from a MYSTERIOUS person  :san:

Anyway, I would like to see how you all feel about it and if there is a lot of interest we can break down some rules and stuff and start the actual list!

BRING IT ON! :)

Well, I would love to join, but i'm not sure if I qualify. ;)
Also, would there be a gift value limit? Min/Max?

Well... I would say you are reputable enough :)

As far as spending limits are concerned... I don't think there really should be a limit. I guess you could divide gifts into brackets but that would be a little too much work. I say no limits! (this should get more interest) Just don't give what you cannot afford. It will also bring out a little more of the surprise factor

I think for right now we should work on interest and how we can refine the idea. I have plenty of ideas but I first need to see if there is interest and how you all feel.

I'd be in! Sounds like fun. Don't know what I would give yet, but I could figure it out!

But regarding limit - I don't think there should be one either. It's less in the spirit of the fun. But maybe we should try to set it up so it's one class of things, so people aren't sending off HeNe PSUs while others are sending off 16 flexdrives :p

Maybe just things like:
- Completed lasers
- Custom hosts and/or focusing knobs

That way, these things have worth (i.e. they were *made* by someone here instead of just bought), and yet they are useful to everyone instead of just one person. I know I would like to receive a custom host or a custom build more than I would like to receive a Rayfoss 150mW greenie.

I like the Idea except I don't have good rep here "yet" but I understand If I were you I wouldn't trust a lot of the people here to. So I say it is a good idea and hopefully next year If I am trustworthy enough I might be able to join in on the fun.

Maybe it would actually make sense for us each to find out who our recipient is a few weeks before we actually send off gifts. That way, we can try to think about what might be useful to someone. IE, it would be pretty silly to sent DTR a 445nm diode, etc ;)

One man's treasure is... etc

Oh, and I'm in :)

EDIT: jeffreythe00, it's inevitable that since this board is so large, and this thread involves free stuff, you're going to HAVE to set some sort of firm guideline / threshold for participation. As much as that irks me because of the whole elitist undertone, I think it's necessary for this idea's success. Maybe a rep requirement?

I agree with rhd.

But maybe make it rep or post dependent? I want to be able to participate, and I don't have the highest rep, even though I consider myself a pretty helpful member around here!

Im in too

I was actually planning to do that for a few reasons.

1: Xmas traffic will take an extra few days or more to deliver a gift.
2: My plans are to have this event take place across the LPF board. This means International shipping which may take 2-4 weeks to arrive. (I plan to have an option for those who wish *not to* ship international.
3: You Will have some time to think about what you want to send as well.

I think this is actually a brilliant idea, and, just looking at the reception so far, it looks like it could happen!

Im in..... But there should be a limit. Ive done secret santa before and ppl get butt hurt. The limit should be like 10 or 15 usd. Its a great idea, and shouldnt be tarnished because of money.

You should pair people in the same Country so that shipping costs don't become an issue ;)

I think a "Guideline" would be best so there is still some surprise ;)

Not much can be done with $15 though. I feel, yeah, maybe an upper limit, but not *that* low. Maybe around $100 or so, in case someone is feeling exceedingly generous?

I'd have to agree with chips post, so many times I've seen people give out elaborate gifts worth a fair bit of money, and get a few wire clippings in return.

I'm sure the trusted members here wouldn't do that, but you can't always tell.
