I don't take it as a personal attack, because those aren't my views.

In their mind, if they don't save your soul, then that'd be an eternal life wasted, and one eternal life is more important than a lame, temporary, earth life, because in the end, only eternity matters. Therefore, in the end, they're saving more lives than the aid workers.

Also, IMHO, a fixed, rigid set of rules is better than no rules at all, but sensibility and flexibility(the bestest) cannot always be achieved, it depends on the individual. You for an example happen to be one of the better-than-average people in that respect.

PS: The FLDS church practices polygamy, has few members, and even fewer missionaries. The LDS church is large and monogamous, with a ton of missionaries, all over the world. I suggest you remove a letter from the sign if you really don't want missionaries to come, and while you're at it, you could add Jehovah's Witnesses

Edit PPS: I just realized that this posts sounds argumentative, but i just wanted to make sure that you understood exactly why they do it. Also, Mormons do a ton of humanitarian aid too. According to one newscaster, in regards to a hurricane(i'm fairly sure it was katrina, but im not sure), the first two organizations to arrive to help were the mormons and the LDS church

That was well thought out and put together.

After my second marriage went down the toilet in 1986, I have been rather anti marriage since, and I just like *** too much to go without.

Live good, help others and be happy. works for me, and I feel far from "empty" otherwise.

They are not "sharing good words." They are proselytizing. There is a huge difference in the intent behind those different actions.

When I close the door in the face of an LDS or JW proselytizer, I am performing a service for them. BOTH were told by their church that they would be "persecuted" for their faith. My insulting them strengthens their faith that they are doing god's work.

Some have suggested that this is the actual reason behind the LDS "missionary" work. It is a stated goal of the JW church. They not only get "inoculated" against attacks on their faith, but they get to see how evil the world really is and how special that makes them.

I simply shake my head and close the door. Everybody walks away from the encounter satisfied.

I used to slam the door in their faces, but I have developed more respect for the fragility of door frames.

We seem to be approaching this concept that people should be "nice" to people actively pushing their beliefs onto others. Remember, niceness and freedom SHOULD go BOTH ways.

If you think that I should be nice to them by listening, why don't you think that they should be nice to me be respecting my privacy and waiting patiently for me to approach them to ask questions?

If you think that they have the right to communicate their beliefs by knocking on my door, why don't you think that I have the right to communicate my beliefs by telling them to feck off and slamming the door in their faces?

Peace,
dave

Default Re: LPF's Religion

I've actually let Mormon missionaries give me 30+ minutes of their spiel, and found it quite educational, although not educational in the way they intended. It reminded me of some advice from the TV show Scrubs: when dating someone (or courting, as in this case) you can't let all your craziness out at once, you have to let them see your craziness a little piece at a time so they can get used to it, because if you let it out all at once then they're not going to accept it.

And that's how these missionaries did it. Elder Faver and Elder Moss talked for 10 minutes about how similar their beliefs were to other sects of Christianity...and then got to that "except..." part and starting talking about a few of the smaller differences. Quite interesting, indeed. They even gave me a free, big version of the Book of Mormon, not like those tiny pocket Testaments the Gideons like to hand out.

That was in a park near campus, and then a couple weeks later they happened to come to our apartment door and recognized us, which made for even more hilarity. I don't know how long Elders Faver and Moss had been doing their mission work, but they were definitely VERY rusty on "what to say the SECOND time you meet someone you've already spoken to". It was pretty clear we were some of the first people they had ever actually gotten to talk to a second time, and was very funny how they stuttered through it, clearly trying to remember what they were supposed to do. "OH, HI!...So, uh, so, have you, uh, had a chance to, uhm, read any of the, uh, materials we gave you?"

I was waiting for Elder Faver to pull out an instruction manual or checklist or something "Oh, I've met you before...wait just a sec..." ::pulls out manual, flips to middle, scans instructions::. It was just very interesting that they were very well practiced and very good at giving the first spiel, but very unpracticed at giving a second one to the same person.

The LDS church has a "milk before meat" policy. The "elders" don't even know all the mysteries yet. "Priesthood" has not yet been conferred upon them. Their job is only to feed "milk" to the "babies" they meet. You've definitely got to be around awhile to get to the really good stuff.

The book is just the tip of the iceberg

Peace,

My favorite line I use "now you know where I live, please give me your home address, so I can come and visit you unannounced to share my views with you"

The typical response is "I would rather you came to our church instead, the doors are always open there"

So I close the conversation with "you just showed up at my home uninvited, so why should I not be allowed to do the same for you?"

My ex (way back in 1984) let a pair of Jehovahs in and sat at the table with them while I was at work, paving the way for a return visit, I was home alone at the time (mind you I was only 20 then) I dropped a ****o in the VCR and offered them a bong, They never came back.

Well I should hope so. If they had more missionaries than members... that means someone divided by zero.

Fixed^

Just about everything CAN lead to problems. We make risk assessments every day, but god/religion should not play any role in these assessments. If you believe alcohol will likely become addictive to you, that is an arguably good reason to avoid it. If god said you can't drink alcohol, can't enjoy hot beverages, or can't eat meat on Friday, that is not a good reason because the only thing you have to gain from it is purely speculative.

If I may quote that pamphlet yet again, "It makes me nauseous to think that children are being taught that the most important part of their life is auditioning for the next one. This is a truly poisonous concept that inevitably leads to the degradation of our current world as a transit life - a 'vale of tears' that we must 'put up with' momentarily until our ticket is clipped and we are rescued from this miserable existence of trial and temptation.

In stark contrast, atheists in general believe this to be our one and only life, a view which, I can assure you, makes life precious beyond all value."

I guess its hard for people to understand why other christians want to ring their door bell and talk to them about their belief in God, Life, what happnes when you die etc.. I wouldn't mind someone ringing my door bell sometime ( if I'm already awake) If I'm not busy then I don't mind discussing those things. I like to hear and tell other people my opinion and compare. But they shouldn't be rude.

It is very easy to understand their motivations. It is just rude and an invasion of personal privacy.

But they shouldn't be rude.

I agree that nobody should come at your doorstep with their religion, I don't do it either. But I've done things like organising a sports event on a sport field in the city, everyone was welcome, and besides sporting most of the time, we spoke about our beliefs.
I mean, we're not even as irritating as a large ad alongside of the road. So please annoy yourself about people at your doorstep, but that's not me.

Another things turning up regularly: all the "rules". It's not that I'm forbidden all sort of things, there are some good advices. Things like not drinking too much. It's not that drinking is forbidden, I do it too sometimes if I want.
It's not that I have to do all sorts of things, I skip church as much as I want. I just don't want to.

And I study applied physics, so it's not that I dismiss science.
