The only one religion whose ideals i truly agree with would be pastafarianism. The belief that a flying ********* monster created the world and that pirates are divine beings, and when we die we get sent to a beautiful place with beer volcanoes and stripper factories. This is obviously the divine truth.

Default Re: LPF's Religion

Just thought I would share a little story.

My mom came into town for the holidays. She's an evangelical Christian and always has some really neat stories. This time she claims she has power over the weather, she says "a couple weeks ago it was raining really hard down in South Dakota (where she lives) and everybody was in a panic"..."so i said a prayer and 3 seconds later the rain stopped, it was a miracle of god"

The funny thing is, when I asked her how often her prayers like that get answered, she said "they usually dont, thats what makes it so special".

I tried to explain that if she said 1000 prayers and only one got answered it is not evidence that her prayers work, it is a matter of odds being in her favor that eventually one prayer will appear to be answered. Of course if you pray for the rain to stop and then 3 seconds later it stops, it will be a more memorable event than the other 999 times it didnt stop.

Needless to say she still thinks she has power over the weather along with her entire church group. /facepalm

Here is a nice video contribution also... Derren brown uses the same techniques of certain superstitious organizations to convert people, even though he is a non believer. They are all deconverted at the end and told it was just a psychology experiment. Funny stuff!

I have an old 8mm film of most of my family (before I was born) waving goodbye to the rest of their relatives. There are six cars all lined up with their respective families standing in front of them as the camera pans across the whole group.

They had sold everything that they could not pack into their cars, for very little, for a fast sale. They had to rush to get out of California. You see their preacher had had a vision.

He saw a light (obviously sent from god) that hovered over a particular passage in his bible. (I'm sorry. I cannot remember which it was). This passage dealt with the flood.

He understood that god was telling him that "The Earthquake" was coming and that most of California would be under water in a very short time. He and his congregation were to be spared *IF* they hurried to obey god's will and flee immediately.

We are still waiting . . . . . . And the older of them all died in Oklahoma of ordinary causes

Peace,
dave

Derren Brown's Messia is a pretty good video to watch if you're interested in how and why people's belief systems work. Shame Channel 4 don't allow it to be watched in the UK without their permission (they have some deal with MSN Video that means they make a fat load of money on the side...)

On another note, there was an attempt by an extremist on Kurt Westergaard's life this weekend:

Danish Artist Kurt Westergaard Nearly Killed Over 'Mohammed' Cartoon - Kurt Westergaard - Zimbio

Hey now, weather control through prayer is nothing new, and certainly works! Native Americans (and other ancient peoples) were doing rain dances during droughts centuries ago, and it worked every single time!

Yep, it worked every single time they prayed and danced for rain...because they didn't stop until it started raining.
