Highly understandable, and there's nothing wrong with the basic human desire to believe there is something more waiting for them.

If faith instills morals and values, then I am all for it.

When lack of faith or misunderstanding faith cause war or senseless death, then I am not so inclined to be "for it"

Thank you for bringing up the point that it's not important to declare which specific "organized" religion one belongs to.

Yes. Knowing the difference between right and wrong is more important than believing in any specific Deity or savior, or any number of repetitions of (lip service) prayers.

Evil = kill someone that is shooting you just for save your life ?

Is difficult to reduce something in a definition, also cause, most of the times, any phrase can have 2 (or more) meanings .....

I would say that one does not "believe" in science, instead you should "accept" science.

The scientific-process is just a way of asking questions and seeking answers, but there is no "absolute-knowledge". Our best understanding can, and will always be updated as new information becomes available.

Belief is best left to theology, IMO.

I would posit that "science" is also simply a "belief system." That is why we call ourselves scient-IST (like a bhuddaist or a scientologist). We "believe in" science.

When people define the difference between science and religion, the most prevalent answer is that religion's knowledge is based in a "leap of faith" and science's knowledge is testable.

All religious knowledge is based in one basic "leap of faith" that unifies the belief system. Some of those "leaps of faith" are; Jesus is the son of god, Bhudda taught the right way, There is only one god and Mohamed is his prophet, Jesus came to the America's too, The Earth is a living entity, Athena sprang from the head of Zeus, fully grown, dressed in armor, etc. Once one has accepted the original "leap of faith" then a complete belief system can be built around it.

The problem with most people is that they do not recognize that the belief system is based in a leap of faith. Since they "believe" it, it is TRUE. To question the original leap of faith is to tear down the entire belief structure and leave the person with "nothing."

The problem with most scientists is that they also do not recognize that their belief system is also based in an original leap of faith. The leap of faith at the base of the scientist's belief system is that "all things are knowable through the use of one of my five senses." Once one accepts that premise, then an entire belief system can be built on it.

However, are all things knowable and testable using one of the five senses?

One can "believe" this is TRUE, but can one "prove" it? The answer is, No. All of the tests we use to prove it are also based in our original leap of faith. Just as one cannot prove whether Athena sprang from the head of Zues or whether she was actually the love child of Poseidon and Libya, one cannot prove that there is NOT some mystical knowledge obtained through a "close, personal" relationship with god. One cannot prove that there is not something else out there.

One cannot prove that something does not exist.

I know that some will take these arguments out of context to justify their own belief systems. I don't care. I believe in science. I believe that science has the best story available. However, can I prove that it is true? No. Especially not to someone with a different belief system. I can show them things, but they must accept the original leap of faith.

The main difference for me between science and religion is that science doesn't wage war to eliminate other belief systems. Science doesn't require one to go "door-to-door" proselytizing. Science doesn't ask me to forgo earthly pleasure in the hope that the next life or the afterlife will be better.

The human brain WANTS to believe in something.

"M Theory", please.

"String Theory" is sooooo last week!

EVERYBODY knows that 10 dimensions are not nearly enough to unify the theory. It is OBVIOUSLY the recognition of this 11th dimension that will finally trigger the revelation.

Once people start to realize how super gravity interacts with the 2 and 5 dimensional membranes the Flying ********* Monster (at long last) will be able to manifest itself into a physical entity.

Lets hope they find the higgs boson, instead of tearing a rip in the time-space continuum, causing a super-massive 11-dimensional black hole to emerge sucking everything into oblivion....

Remember; Information is never "lost." It just changes form in the black hole. Maybe it only "looks" like oblivion from this side of the dimensional transition.

I'm sure that on the other side the streets are paved with gold, and that we will all live on milk and honey, while lying with the lion and our 72 virgins are catering to our every desire.

Heathen
