Settle for a Demigod

Just wanted to rant a little bit.

So I have been in this psychology class for about a month and a half and I am blown away at some of the stuff the teacher has been saying. He is teaching from a book written by David G Myers - a religious fanatic. When the class first started he mentioned that he wouldn't teach anything that had to do with evolution because apparently evolution fails to explain any human behaviors. It seems Yale has it all wrong because the course taught there is hugely based on evolution, but whatever. So the guy has been teaching all these wild and crazy theories of his, and today he blew my mind.

He began by talking about instincts and then he asked the class "how do birds know how to build their nests?"... "is this information hardwired in their DNA?...could be" then his dumb ass says "it could also be that the bird learned the information from their parents through telepathy and they are actually born with a blank slate mind". Over and over again he keeps talking about people having psychic powers and ESP...pissing me off!

On another occasion he claimed that when people have near-death out-of-body experiences they can see the world from angles they shouldn't be able to see. He claims they are able to report things that they would only be able to see from 20 feet in the air. HE'S A DUALIST! Anytime our text book brings up evolution, it criticizes the theory! On several occasions this book talks about the so-called benefits of religion and even gives advice on how to indoctrinate your children better! This is in a public school WTF!

Daguin, I know your a professor at a university do you see this kinda stuff where you teach? Should this guy be able to get away with teaching so much false information (I could easily falsify a big portion of his lectures)?

Edit: the bird scenario makes more sense when I mention that he said, "A chick is born in an already made nest, they might see a little maintenance take place but they never actually witness the nest being made. Yet they fly off and manage to build a nest of their own without ever seeing how its done...but how?"

As a breeder of animals, and a study of humans, I sincerely feel DNA "hardwired" data is spot on.

Exactly. I currently have 207/200 points and it is the most unsatisfying A I have ever gotten. I am answering test questions with supernatural answers. His favorite thing to say is, "see, I told you science can't explain everything". The fuck is this crap?

The worst part is that all my classmates are eating up his every word like this was the best class they have ever taken. I feel like I'm watching 30 people get brain washed by the reincarnation of Jesus.

I am sorry you have to put up with this. What may happen, depends greatly on whether he is tenured or not. You need to get as many of your fellow students that feel the same way you do to write an email and then go see his department chair or division dean. There will be an outline filed with the department that gives the guidelines for the course. If he is not satisfying those guidelines, action can be taken.

If he is tenured, he may get no more than a "talking to." If he is not tenured, he can be released or not rehired. Your main problem right now is what do you do. Even if he will not be rehired, he may be allowed to finish the semester.

You have to decide if you are willing to put up with him and "give him what he wants" so you can get a grade or if you should drop the class to get a better education next semester

Remember, professors are just people too. Some of them are just plain whacked

He just recently retired from working in the mental-health industry so I doubt he is tenured. But from the way my peers seem to enjoy this class I really doubt I will be able to find anyone willing to make an issue of his teachings.

I will look into either way. If evolutionary psychology is part of the outline (which I would guess it is) he is most certainly not fulfilling that part of the curriculum.

On another note, I signed up for a 7 page extra-credit paper that is supposed to be on the evolutionary pre-dispositions that set us up to hold a dualistic theory of mind. So far I have an A, but I signed up to write the paper before I knew how he felt about supernatural phenomenon. So now my entire essay goes against everything he teaches in class and I can't change it. He has talked about doing that to a girl who would have earned a B but she decided to write her paper about the benefits of spanking - something he is against - and she earned a nice C+. Instead of an "extra-credit" paper she wrote a "negative-credit" paper.

Sorry for ranting so much, I'm just a little angry about being required to learn how to indoctrinate my kids with the Christian faith. I will figure this thing out even if I have to swallow my tongue and not turn in my paper. If I can maintain my grade I wont need the paper anyway . And I'm not majoring in psyche so I wont ever have to see this guy again.

Yeah. Sometimes it is more expedient to just say what they want and move on.

There was a study published a couple of years ago that showed that a professor today was more likely to be fired for being politically incorrect than for being incompetent.

First off, I would like to say that I haven't laughed this hard in years. seriously literaly years. I should have read this thread months ago!!!! I especially loved a lot of the mormon jokes, living here in utah near SLC religion is kind of an omnipresent thing sometimes. It sometimes seems like you can't go into a single house in the area without finding 20 pictures of jesus.... and thats just in the entryway...... I'm a big believer in letting people believe whatever they wish to believe. but the humor in this thread is still very compelling

As far as DNA coded behavior, here is a first hand personal experience, albeit a minor one, but supports heavily the DNA stance. I personally can NOT stand still for long just standing. I have to lean up against something or it just annoys the hell out of me. Now this is hardly unusual. However, when I lean up against a wall, I always have to put one foot up against the wall and stand on the remaining leg. I do this entirely without thinking about it. and for no rational reason. If there is nothing to lean against, I will notice I have picked up one foot, and placed it on top of the foot I am standing on, with my knee out to the side. Anytime I am standing for a while I find I am always, invariably, standing on one foot. I can't explain why I do, I just know it feels "right" to do so, and not doing it just feels wrong and uncomfortable.
Neither of my parents do this. at all. However my aunt does. so do several cousins of mine, all on the same side of the family. This trait runs in the family, but sporadically. I have stood like this for as long as I can remember. I think this is a simple very basic behavior that's coded into DNA. As for things like birds building nests. One could always google studies done with eggs hatched in a lab. I can promise you that the birds that hatch from eggs fertilized in a lab, with no contact with biological parents, kept out of contact with all other birds, will still build nests just fine. This is a simple enough concept, I am quite certain there must be many studies done on inborn behaviors and instincts.....

I'm no scientist but.... I imagine he would say that ESP can travel long distances.

I was driving to class yesterday and heard, once again, the inane "In the Beginning God created Eve, not Steve" argument. I got to thinking. According to scripture, God is Gay. What follows is a response to the Eve vs. Steve argument

I'm sorry but that it just completely silly. The argument above would be correct if the Genesis had actually said those things, but it very plainly says the opposite. You have to try very hard, to read Genesis like that. God created Adam to help care for the garden, and to have rule over the animals there. Eve was created as the "suitable" helper for Adam since none were found. God brought her to the man,

"This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and they will become one flesh.

God made Eve specifically FOR Adam.

Genesis 1: 27-31 explains everything else.

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

I'm not a fan of the Adam and Steve argument myself, as it fails to cover lots of other things.

Glutton: I'm sorry you have a professor that is trying to indoctrinate you. I don't know who or what he stands for, but I can tell you for sure, that he is in the wrong. I have professors like this, and on the opposite extreme myself. I wish I had more neutral professors, but I know that won't ever happen. So long as I am in philosophy classes, and psych classes, I will be hit with those extremes daily. It sucks, I know. Everyone has their own religion. Everyone worships something, either a statue, a deity, or themselves. That's why I'm not a huge fan of religion myself. I believe religion is solely for one's own benefit. To live better, be kind, be peaceful. That's sort of selfish to me.

I hate my psychology class especially, there's no arguing a psychology professor... mine is always right.
