Very well said! And indeed so true, unfortunately those very traits make it hard for people to accept the truth... I would add that we as a race seem to have an "orphan complex", when we mature as individuals and no longer can depend on the loving care of our parents, there is a place left empty that we should fill with our own choices, our own ideals, our own achievements; yet for most people that seems too hard, so they retreat into the safety of childhood and fill it with imaginary mothers and fathers (depending on whether the society is matriarchal or patriarchal)... And thus a lot of gods are born, out of the needs of (wo)men (heh, that kinda reminds me of the beginning from Black&White, what a nice little game that was; banned in Islamic countries by the way)...

A beautiful summary of one of the oldest philosophies of life, the so-called "golden rule", it actually predates current religions and exists in some form in different social species throughout the animal kingdom. So simple yet so powerful, too bad it's so often ignored...

Well, actually there are more of these the one with a homepage on alaska.net is the hoaxy one, evidently sarcastic. However the forum is quite real and there are true believers over there.

They even have a FAQ with great gems such as this:
Q: "What about Lunar Eclipses and Moon Phases?"
A: A celestial body, known as the antimoon, passes between the sun and moon. This projects a shadow upon the moon.

Check it out: The Flat Earth Society

Cyparagon has given one, there are also others:
Daniel 4:10-11, talking about a tree so tall it was visible "to the ends of the world" (impossible for a sphere);
Matthew 4:8, again -- this time a high mountain;
Also in other places mentions of "corners", "pillars" and foundations, and so on... It's not much of a surprise, really, the cultures around the place and time when various parts of that book where written did have a pizza-like view of the earth, so it was only natural for that to slip into the text.

What I wanted to point out though was that nobody in their right mind would still believe such a "theory" today, and actually theologians now strive to re-interpret passages "allegorically" to make the ancient texts sound "correct"... it's so sad, will there be "proof" in the future that the holy books teach evolution?

It's pretty medieval.
So very true, it is of course backwards... But it can get a lot worse! Guess what they did over in my country? A few years ago, the whole theory of Evolution was taken out of Biology books -- just like that! Sure, there were still mentions here and there, yet the chapter that discussed it in depth was missing. They also went one step further, and took out the chapters about "god" from the Philosophy books in high-school... Funny, eh? It took a new government and a few years of NGO's fighting to get this repaired, and all the while the general public didn't really seem to care -- that's what saddened me the most. And we're supposed to be an EU member :-P

But you do, you lose your own freedom to choose actions based on reason and your own feelings, not on the writings of some thousand-years-old book; you lose all those great things you could or would have done yet you choose not to because of fear of a jealous god; but most of all, you lose the most powerful ability that sets us appart on this planet and perhaps in the known universe: the ability to THINK. If you let fear and opportunism (for what is belief for the sake of such a wager if nothing but opportunism?) take precedence over thought, you become nothing but a machine, something even goody-god apparently doesn't want... And hey, I think if he/it did exist he'd have a special place in Hell for all the ones who took that wager :-P

Stumbled across this (an image from this site was posted a few months ago) and thought it might be amusing to some, serious and thought-provoking to others.

OBJECTIVE: 4 Kidz with Lambuel!

I REALLY hope this is satire...

the islam video may seem very impressive at first, but we can't just consider the hits and ignore the misses.

sure the koran contains many (vague) verses which have been shown to be correct, but how many verses are incorrect?
given the vagueness of the verses, one can easily look back at the koran to find what we already know (we are good at finding what we want to find).

take the koran, make a list of predictions (not yet discovered by current science) based on every verse, and if science eventually agrees with every one of them, then i will be impressed

Precisely... Not only that, but most of that "incredible" knowledge was common at that time! Let us not forget that the ancient Greek discovered (or more likely "made educated guesses") about the atom, evolution, the round Earth (even calculating it's size quite well), orbits of planets and so forth. The fact that in Europe the fall of the Roman Empire led to the loss of most of that knowledge (since the books were in Greek and people couldn't read that anymore), the Arab world was still enjoying it's benefits. While in Europe we had the Middle Ages, for the Arabs it was the Golden Age! That meant a lot of development in all areas, including building upon the foundations of ancient science and philosophy.

Unfortunately, far from being a "scientific" book, the Koran managed to dumb down the people that took it seriously, to the point that nowadays all Arab countries are enjoying a significant cultural retardation -- they are in their own "Dark Ages", being slowly pulled out by commercial and cultural exchanges with the West.

For a stelar dissection of a sample of "science" from that book, read this little work.

However, I must say that I applaud and admire the muslims who try to find reason in their book and follow it because they truly believe, compared to the masses who blindly do what they are told, without even understanding the language let alone the concepts herein -- those are horribly deranged people (and unfortunately all religions breed them) that I wouldn't want to have any kind of interaction with.

I will be honest...that is a pretty sweet looking shirt.

Infidel: A person who does not believe in religion or who adheres to a religion other than one's own.

We all know that Global Warming isn't real, but Pirates are.

Unfortunately it is very much real. I was trained in the Assembly of God church (so conservative that we were just one step away from the "snake handlers" of the south) by parents who were "domestic missionaries." I spent my formative years building small churches and moving on.

Fortunately, I got better

Unfortunately as well. One of my sons has returned to the church. My 11 year old granddaughter just went to a week long summer camp where these puppets were part of the "entertainment."

She and her six year old brother visited me yesterday. She "proudly" proclaimed that she had "spoken in tongues" at a prayer service at the camp.

Peace,
dave
