Science education in the US isn't being threatened? What about the scores of schools districts, and even states, that are now trying to pass resolutions to require intelligent design be taught in science classrooms, or require that evolution be prefaced by a disclaimer that it is somehow not accepted as truth among scientists?

Notice I said "going to vote science out of the classroom", and that is most certainly happening today across the United States, in many places. People are attempting to vote to intentionally promote ignorance in school systems on the basis of religion, there's no denying that fact.

And yes, I did cherry pick that post, because it was the one with the discussion points I was interested in. I have no interest in morality arguments amongst religions, because most every religion on the planet has at some point caused terrible, hateful actions. No mainstream religion I'm aware of has any moral high ground to stand on, so I stay away from any of that. I'm also disinterested in theological arguments about free will vs. pre-destiny, so I avoid those too.

I'm interested in the continuing degradation of science education throughout the United States due to direct action by religious organizations. Religion belongs in neither public education nor government. That's my interest, and one of my causes, so I'll take those arguments while everyone else sorts out the philosophical and moral perspectives on religion or lack-thereof.

Science should be taught in school. The data, how it was achieved, what has been discovered -- these are the backbone of science. But science cannot mean much without interpretations as to meaning. Evolution is the reigning paradigm governing those interpretations at the moment, and in that light should certainly be taught. It is not a fact apart from simple speciation, however, and should not be taught as such. I personally don't mind if creation is not taught. I do think, however, that challenges to the evolution interpretation should be discussed, and the idea of options to that interpretation be discussed. But as for actually injecting a religious viewpoint into the discussion in terms of the Bible, the Koran, the Vedas, or any other religious work -- that might be a good project for a term paper to compare different ideas, but it is not a good idea for science classroom study. Since evolution itself is an idea that is quite pervasive, however, it certainly should be part of the curriculum, but it should not be treated as some sort of icon immune from challenge or disagreement. To do so is to disallow students to think their own way through data and possible meanings. We need scientists-in-training, not robots.

Poor @Nicko you sure can give it...ever try reading a book?.
maybe build a laser or something. I'll give you one if you can scratch up the money for frieght.
then you could give your post count a break.
What makes you think I don't read? Do I sound like an illiterate person to you?
The fact that I post here doesn't mean I spend the whole day pressing F5 to refresh this thread, you know.
I've been here for over 1,5 years and I'm a very active member. My post count doesn't mean I post crap everywhere (spam, anyone?).
If you want to send me a laser I wouldn't mind paying for shipping

Truly astounding.

And you clearly don't know how evolution works. Don't worry though, you're not alone. The widespread misunderstanding and misrepresentation of evolution throughout the US is a major failing of the US education system.

I'll also add that this is a self-propagating failure: the more people don't understand and "believe" in evolution, the worse the education is going to get because people are going to vote science out of the classroom, just because they don't understand it.

I love you.

*sigh*... I really feel sorry for Americans... I can't imagine what it would be like to live in such a backwards society. I'm surprised there aren't more schools teaching that copernican astronomy is heresy and that the sun revolves around the earth. Do your hospitals still practice bloodletting?

Yes, the do. However, now we use medical grade leeches to suck out the blood and use them to reduce the swelling in damaged limbs

He he he, where do you get those crazy "Facts"? I think way less than 99% of American scientists are atheists and many of the Americans really would like to believe in a creator, but really, if you talk sense ably to them admit, they simply don't know what to believe. LOL! -Glenn

I don't have anything against the belief in some sort of God, but to not believe in the theory of Evolution in the 21st century, wth.. It's basically proven, really.

I believe your throwing things out of proportion, but yes, something like that could leave him longing for a purpose in life, which might lead him to God.

Hmm, I've had my share of "anti-american" friends and debates, but I must say I can't agree with such sweeping generalisations... The US is a very large country, and by it's sheer population you're bound to find the whole range from geniuses to imbeciles. And we all know there are way more of the latter all around us! Looking back, I believe the rest of the world has to thank the US for a lot of things, especially advancements in the area of science with the most developed scientific programs in the world, and not to forget the "friendly" contest with the russians that managed to bakrupt the USSR. Of course, their foreign policy has been nothing but blunder after blunder since 1990, it seems when there isn't a uniting goal to raly everyone around, the jackals take charge and steer the ship into the ground... It's unfortunate to see American culture and civilization suffer, after all they did more for freedom and democracy than any other "western" country; we can only hope there is still time for a recovery before the Chinese take over

But returning to the topic of religion, I'd say the resurgence of irrationality has been a global problem, not in the least limited to the US. There are whole countries in the EU (like Poland for example, or the economically and culturally retarded Eastern lands) that boast 90% "believers" and a strong Church that is deeply involved in public affairs... In my country we still have religious symbols in class and "religion" is a mandatory (officially not, but it is in practice) course in school, taught by a priest! How's that for backwards? There are also these nice manuals where they teach you how goody-god will have you run over by a car if you don't behave (I'm not kidding, I've seen them!)

Let's not even mention the islamic countries, most of which have just emerged from the medieval period (they still have public lashings and beheadings) and are so religious it's not even funny; many of those people love their own countries so much that they emigrate to the US or EU, where they start flourishing communities and threaten secular society with their very backwards views regarding just about anything...

What about South America or Africa where judeo-christian-muslim mythology has been combined with various local superstitions to produce deformed mutants of so-called "spirituality", where the Catholic Church still is responsible for the spread of AIDS and countless babies that noone can feed with thier horrible teachings of "abstinence" instead of the use of condoms?

On the whole planet, it seems an idiotic fervor has caught people's minds, and even if it's not religion, some other stupidity like astrology, spiritism or alien abductions takes the irrational place of worship. Only a few, mainly in Asia and some select countries of western and northern Europe seem to be sane, and it's unsure for how long...

That's why I think it's so important to not just oppose extremism and fundamentalism, but the very essence of religious thought which puts "faith" above reason, wishful-thinking above fact and authority above freedom! Otherwise people will always fall victim to the "religion-du-jour", be it about Jebus or the Flaming-Globes from Venus!

Oh, and by the way, you do know that the Earth is actually flat, don't you? It says so right there in the good book! Just read it with an open mind and heart, and then you will be able to free yourself from the treacherous scientific conspiracy that has brainwashed everyone into believing the heresy that the Earth was round!

See, there is even a forum just like ours: theflatearthsociety.org - Index and some more details on the big wiki. We all know that "round planets", "big stars", "the sun at the center" are nothing but theories, and the so-called evidence they present is pitiful! All those photographs are evidently doctored (you can see they use fish-eye lenses, duh!), and all that nonsense about gravity is nothing but the work of Satan to darken our minds... Free yourself, join the Flat Earth Society today!
