Quote:
Under Orthodox Judaism, masturbation is forbidden, seen as a violation of an age-old covenant with God that promotes and encourages procreation. *** is viewed as a sacred act and intercourse is permissible only after marriage.

"One who spills his seed literally kills his sons," Prosper Malka, one rabbi interviewed in the film, tells Gruder.

Gruder explains the theological reasoning behind the Jewish ban on spilling sperm: "The reproductive organ is called the 'covenant.' Spilling one's seed is called 'damaging the covenant.' And abstaining from masturbation is called 'guarding the covenant.'"

I thought we were talking about the specific non-denominational Protestant beliefs that USABro and I shared. Why bring in a video of three half naked guys pretending to whacking off to each other?

Does it contribute to your quote/article on Orthodox Judaism? Is it supposed to act as a visual to enhance our understanding? Maybe you enjoy it, but I and probably most others do not have even the slightest bit of pleasure of viewing it.. let's keep the quality of these posts..

Cyparagon, I would save your abject judgements for a latter time. Take away the ubiquitous gif too while you're at it. USABro failed to explain where he was coming from. If you think about, every argument needs a premise, right? And while premises are proved, if you continue to backtrack, at a certain point, there'll be a point where you're left with just axioms (first principles). That's what he meant.

I feel the spirit of your posts are spiteful. I agree USABro needs to increase the filtering of his posts and comments. Can we just let him know? If you're extremely frustrated just don't say anything. Better than all the insults out of malice.

sounds like a subjective enterprise if I ever heard one. one man's dogma is another's laughing stock, good luck with that

let's be sure to differentiate between insults to people, and insults to their ideas. if your ideas cant stand up to ridicule, testing, questions, and mockery, then do not submit ideas to a public forum. that's the beauty of it. no one's ideas are held on a pedestal above any others. every individual must decide for themselves which ideas make the most sense. natural selection of ideas based on merit, rather than one side dictating what is true and accurate. at least that's the theory. no ideas should be above scrutiny. I.E., this isnt church

dont get mad when others expose inconsistencies in your ideas. inconsistency often conceals lies, which is why it's important to be consitent. I personally welcome it

Talking Re: LPF's Religion

I think the idea of the posts showing people shining shoes and so forth to essentially play with the idea that masturbation is a taboo, as the post referenced the taboo's themselves...was inline with the general theme, in this thread at least, of using cartoons/gifs, etc, to illustrate or emphasize the points of view being made and/or exposed, etc.

I saw the shoe shining etc, and assumed it was shoe shining, etc....so, I'm not sure why some people would be offended, unless their thoughts were only focused on how it might be masturbation?

I remember in a freshman psychology class, the professor asked for a show of hands by those who masturbate.

There were ~ 25 students, and about one tentatively raised their hands...and I count it as ~ 1 as there were some tentative 1/4 raises, etc.

The professor then explained that everyone does it but almost no one will admit it, as they have been taught that its wrong.

It's supposed to be wrong, because its "spilling seed" which could have otherwise been used to make more of whatever religion was telling you it was wrong, and the forefathers wanted lots of new members.

If it was to make more people to fill the earth and be fruitful and multiply, they would not ALSO tell you to kill the babies of OTHERS, etc.

So, technically, not making babies with every batch of baby batter should also be as wrong, as its the equivalent end result.

I can't think of why causing yourself pleasure that harms no one else, or yourself, would be morally wrong...and, about 100% of the healthy Judeo-Christian humans on the planet can rationalize that, and pleasure themselves, while at the same time, pretending to think its wrong because that's what they were taught to think.

Its another example of the tortured rationalizations and cherry picking people who want to think of themselves as good people have to put themselves through to adhere to what they think is their only moral compass, external to them.

Yes, I think it does. It serves to illustrate how ridiculous religious beliefs are, and how they run contrary to nature. I have also seen complaints from a few members here who feel christianity get's picked on too, so thought to point out that it's far from the only religion with crazy beliefs.

I also thought it was quite humorous but then I don't have a giant stick stuck anywhere, placed there by irrational beliefs.

I love spirituality, but religion as a belief system people use to justify their acts, not so much.

Sincerely investigate any of these three short quotes as new concepts and you've taken your first step into a larger world:

"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness..." - Max Planck. "Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real" - Neils Bohr. "What we call physical things and events do not exist independently of subjective experience..." - Deepak Chopra.

Each of these three rabbit holes go deep, ending up in the same place.

All religions are someone else's previously digested spirituality, go for the fruit of your own living sense of spirituality which brings love into your life, it's innate to all self-conscious beings, no organization can give it to you, you can only find it within.

Lets just break this down factually:

Pros of masturbation:
-Improves mood
-In most healthy people, it is pleasurable
-In males, it cycles out semen, thus improving reproductive potential
-Good for the heart

Cons of masturbation:
-Can be messy
-Carpal tunnel
-Some old ass book says its wrong

Also, men continuously generate new sperm, so its not a "waste" any more than a woman shedding an egg every month.

I believe in biology and our biology says its a good thing to do.

I'd say moderate spite and cynicism are a rather mild response.

I have noticed over the years both a trend towards what is referred to as "Political Correctness".

I believe the intent of this practice was originally to entreaty all of us to be sensitive to the feelings of others, and to respect their beliefs and lifestyles, etc.

The way it's PRACTICED, is

1) To call anyone who asks FOR YOU to follow it, after you hurt THEIR feelings, is to essentially use it as a derisive way of saying "Stop whining and being so sensitive".

You can then brag that you don't care about "Being all politically correct and all that BS".

2) To ask others to think about your feelings or beliefs, and to respect them.

So, Schools in the US are typically closed for the winter holidays, because of Christmas...but don't close for the Muslim or other religion's holy days unless they overlap the Christian holiday season.

Technically, there should be a separation of church and state, so religious holidays should not be part of the school's schedule....

...but, from a practical perspective, if most of the student's will miss school then, what's the point? In PA for example, some schools are closed on the opening day of Buck Season, as many of the kids are out hunting anyway.

So, let's say that it IS OK to close on religious holidays...and, "everyone" is used to the familiar CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY based days off, for Easter, Christmas, etc...and, some school districts with Muslims, or Jews, or hunters, or whatever, should the school districts be ALLOWED to close for religious holidays?

Is it a violation of Church and State Separation, or, merely a pragmatic adjustment recognizing that if the kids are not going to show up, just close the school for that day, etc?

Some districts DID contemplate this, and, the CHRISTIANS went ape-sheet at the thought of closing for SOMEONE ELSE'S holiday besides their OWN.

Hunting day, no problem. Another RELIGION?!?!!? WTF!!!!!

Then they start off with the arch-typical wailing about, "Well, then you should not be off on OUR holidays", etc....feeling like they need to somehow find a way to punish the other parties for their gross intrusion into the schedule, etc.

So the school has to be CLOSED, officially, for Christian holidays, but, not for any other religions.

The Christians will tend towards screaming blue bloody murder (Historically at least) at the mere mention of "celebrating terrorism", or whatever term they use to describe the proponents of the other faith, etc.

I say Christians, because they are the only group to complain, so far, in the US, about this issue. I'm SURE some districts WILL eventually be closed on Muslim holidays too, and, I'm sure the losers of that debate in those districts will be blaming it all on all that damn political correctness.

Now, of course, most schools in the US still have the entire Summer off, so that, I kid you not, the children can assist their parent's with the farming.

Add to that the fact that statistically, about no children in the US are assisting their parent's with the farming over the summer...and its bit antiquated.

If we get rid of, or at least shorten, the Summer Break, the kids will have plenty of school days even if religious holidays are off.

To me, if you are being fair, either ALL religions, or none, should be allowed to have holy days off if that holy day makes sense to BE off on.

If a district doesn't have any of an impacted minority, sure, why close....otherwise, why not?

So, political correctness is a double edged sword. When you complain that someone didn't respect your beliefs, you actually WANTED political correctness, say, if they said there was no god, or that your god was the wrong god, or that you were going to burn in hell, or you saw a billboard that showed your religion in a poor light, say "There is no God, and The bible is full of lies!" etc...you'd be "Hey! Take that down! It offends me!"

If you on the other hand belong to a Church or organization that condemns unmixed marriages, or Muslims, or Atheism, and your group puts up a billboard that says "Gays will burn in Hell! Jesus can SAVE YOU!"...and some other group is offended and says "HEY! Take that down! It offends me!"

YOU'D be saying "They went all politically correct and stuff on us, and want us to take down the sign!"

So, the "CORRECTNESS" of the politics seems to be based upon who's foot the shoe is on. When the shoe's on the other foot, the meaning of "Correctness" shifts 180.
