Say what you want about religion and God, but, if you take out all the crap that people add to "religion", belief or not in a higher power shapes a persons life and the type of person you are.

For example:

if you believe in God:

You are accountable for your actions in the ultimate sense not only the here and now.
You have a moral obligation to treat others like you would like to be treated
The family is an institution made to promote love.
You belief there is more to life than 70-80 years and then nothingness.
Morals are a code to live by - doing what is right even if no one is looking.
THESE ARE PRINCIPLES OUTLINED IN THE BIBLE

if you don't believe in God:

then its Survival of the fittest
There is only the HERE and the NOW. epicurean philosophy (eat, drink, be merry, for tomorrow we die)
Which means compassion and love are unnecessary and unintelligent it is strictly instinct that drives procreation and the family.
Stronger can kill the weaker, Stronger can steal from the weaker
Morals are a restriction not a guiding force - do whatever you can get away with.
However we got here, we don't have to answer to anyone except ourselves.
THIS IS THE WAY OF THE ANIMAL WORLD.

These are diametrically opposed. You CAN"T BELIEVE BOTH. Morals, Love, ethics, conscience are all based on a belief in a higher power.

Nonsense.

Note the gist of the above post: if you believe in God (= the christian god, of course), you're GOOD. If not... you're ANIMAL. Pretty mainstream believer attitude.

The qualities I listed are all based on a belief system

Animals have none. Btw, I like animals, I have two cats. But have you ever seen them play with a mouse.

Either we came up from something lower (ie: animals) or down from something higher (ie: God)
Animals do not have a belief system, they don't care. What makes us different from animals? Belief and higher reasoning. Those abilities presuppose qualities that animals can't possess.

Last edited by icecruncher; 05-07-2009 at 03:19 PM. Reason: Added reason for using animals as example

80% of this thread is in bad taste. I have atheist friends and they don't act anything like this. Its all kind of juvenile IMO.

I don't understand how I can get flamed and banned for my personal opinion, but people are allowed to post something that offends me and others in a highly personal way.

A person may state that they believe something when their entire life proves otherwise.

Take for instance the Catholic Priests who molested children. Their morals do not match what they claim.

I would personally say the same of atheists. They say they do not believe in god, yet they believe in the principles that are all around us that teaches god exists.

They expect compassion and love, they often have morals and a great conscience.

Yet those qualities cannot come from a evolutionary process. Darwinism and evolutionary concepts rule them all out.

They can only come from a belief in a higher power.

I'm a Pastafarian and proud of it My moral code is kind of wavery, but essentially, I don't believe that religion is a necessary part of my life. that isn't to say that religion should be removed totally - some people could simply not function without religion - many people can't deal with the uncertainty in their lives, like "What happens when I die" or "is what I am doing right?". For these people, religion takes on a significance, answering all of those questions and allowing them to live their lives. For me, I can cope with not knowing what will happen - if you know the outcome of something, or believe you know, where's the fun in chasing it?

One thing I do not agree with is the teaching of Creationism in schools as a science - it is utterly ridiculous that religious stories, for that is what they are, could be taught as though there is REAL EVIDENCE for this. Science should be taught according to scientific principles, and not biblical evidence. A little advice could be taken from the French on this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La%C3%AFcit%C3%A9 - la´citÚ (the separation of church and state)

Has anyone mentioned the "opium of the masses" quote yet?

There are some things we'll never know, and as humans, are unknowable... Until the day the answers are revealed to me, I'll go on scientifically stating there's an equal likelihood that each religion is correct.

The only one religion whose ideals I truly agree with would be Pastafarianism. The belief that a Flying ********* Monster created the world and that pirates are divine beings, and when we die we get sent to a beautiful place with beer volcanoes and stripper factories. This is obviously the divine truth.

That, of course, is vacuous as best. nothing is more conducive to society than morals from an evolutionary standpoint. If anything, morality is an argument for evolution. We have subsequently been far more successful as a species as a result of our morals.
