I agree with Bill Maher's movie Religulous
also even though it is not a religion I Follow Singularitarianism: is a philosophy and social movement that is defined by the belief that a technological singularity the creation of a superintelligence is a likely possibility within the medium-term future, and that deliberate action ought to be taken to ensure that the technological singularity occurs in a way that is beneficial to humans.

raised protestant with a little Luthern mixed in stopped going to church when I was like 10 "tried" Mormonism when I was in the Navy, it did not take but it was fun as at the time I was seeing this Mormon chic who looked like Shannon Tweed

Default Re: LPF's Religion

I studied religon when I was in college as part of sociology, and it was interesting to learn about different beliefs and what some try to make believe. I respect everyone's beliefs just as long as they don't try force it on me as some religons do!

I have my beliefs and I wish they would respect them, I just like to be left alone and not have people knocking on my door trying to get me to join their church.

Agreed. one of the things I dislike about living here in utah is the fact that at least twice a month mormon missionaries are walking around the apartment complex. They might not always knock on the door, but beware anyone outside walking one's dog... I was raised mormon, but as someone else above put it: "it didn't take" Just wish I could avoid people here judging me by daring to utter a swear word, or for the simple reason of enjoying life on sundays. Apparently one of the core principals of the LDS church seems in practice to be "thou shalt sit on thine ass and suffer in boredom every sunday."

I have friends the were mormon, went on missions and now they are not. I just can't see wasting a nice Sunday in church when I can be water skiing up on Bear lake or doing something else and it pisses my neighbors off when I mow my on sunday!

My next door neighbors won't even talk to me because I am not Mormon.
I don't mean to bash the church, I just wan't them to leave me alone.

The sad part is is that it seems that the church controls the state. Up here when we go to vote it is at the church.

"The sad part is is that it seems that the church controls the state. Up here when we go to vote it is at the church."
I just voted today, the vote was held in my town at the legion (basically a bar)
I think that says something about how astute the government is at figuring out where the people would rather be....

I know what you mean I try to watch what I say so I don't get in trouble like I have on another forum.

I was always taught that there was supposed to be a separation between church and state, I even e-mailed the attorny general about it and got nowhere. Oh well life goes on.

I love going to Canada, everytime I have been there everyone is always friendly and I wind up with a nasty hangover!

I have never once seen a christian or any religious person for that matter provide good sound logical argument for the existence of their specific god. Thus I am a non believer by default.

If someone were able to provide enough evidence to support the existence of a god I would have to change my stance from non believer to non worshiper because Gods are always despicable creatures.

Yup... however, a perfect compromise between perfect medicine and perfect genes is eugenics. Everyone gets to live, and the species gets to keep getting better.

Have you read Wells' Time Machine? The eloi sound a little bit like what we're becoming... smart guy to have noticed way back then...

I have to disagree. We have not removed evolution from mankind. That is quite simply impossible. We have, however greatly modified the evolutionary pressures. In theory when evolutionary pressures are changed suddenly, it actually speeds up evolution, albiet in a new direction.

Remember anything that contributes to the increased production of offspring contributes over time, and anything that takes away from production of offspring suppresses. Therefore various things that contribute to people having more kids will be common in the future. So in 1000 years, we will all be MORMON!!!!!!!!!!

(at the rate they breed, it's a certainty)

I know we still evolve what I mean is that we are actively trying to stop natural selection when it comes to health by keeping the sick alive. When ever someone is sick or disabled we do everything we can to make sure they live as normal of a life as possible. This is the opposite of natural selection.

This too, is natural selection. Humans are not the first or only species that care for their wounded and ill members. We are just better at it.

We have learned that evolution is not a smooth process. Changes are usually the result of some traumatic disruption in the species. We are in the middle of a period of stasis.

Read up on "punctuated evolution" and "bottleneck" theory and the Toba Event. We, as with most species, only "evolve" when our survival is at stake.

Peace,
dave
