I am a good friend of avery's (c0ldshadow) on this forum. We have known each other for over 6 years and have helped each other in different ways. Although I'm new to this forum, my reputation with Avery is strong, and I'm sure he will validate that!

i know that starting up a new idea or business can be a challenge for example when i did http://deeptide.com . i was fortunate to have some of my friends help link back to me and share my software ideas. im just trying help others out since i feel thankful others helped me out with my ideas when i started up

It's a really interesting and innovative idea.

But if I didn't know it was a friend of Avery's doing this, I would ordinarily have just blocked any facebook feed posts from any of my friends using it. :undecided:

What is the reason you'd block it from your feed post? Is it something about how it's presented or written in the status update of users? If you can elaborate, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Please forgive the brutal honesty.

For record, I haven't actually seen it come up in me feed yet.

However, since the concept is prettymuch "spam your friends, get free shit" I don't really see a reason to help them. See, by helping them bid, I encourage them to continue the behavior. It's like replying "LOL" to one of those dumb picture email chain letters. They're just going to keep me on the mailing list.

When a bunch of my friends get accounts (which hopefully will never happen, no offense) I'm going to get spammed, and none of them will be winning since they'll be competing for "likes." So, they'll either quit or try harder. And when a few quit and remove competition, the few that are trying harder will make up for them... and more.

Any way I think about it, it's just going to make me annoyed at friends that use it in the long run - best to just block them from my feed.

Dunno. Just my opinion. Curious to see your thoughts on my mindset.

I agree with Trevor 100%. I would similarly block updates entirely (and do) from friends that cause stuff like this to arrive in my feed.

It really wouldn't (in practice) have anything to do with the merit of the product or service itself, but rather with the mechanism / approach. I don't like that type of advertising being pushed into my feed, and would simply block those friends that caused this to happen.

I really want to highlight though, that this is just a reflection of how I behave in practice. Right or wrong, that's what I ACTUALLY DO when using Facebook and facing this type of social advertising. So whether or not my approach is a good one, who knows, but it's what I actually do, and suspect others may too?

Thanks for your honesty. As you guys may already know, Facebook has began displaying sponsored stories which turns news feed posts into homepage ads. What do you guys think of that?

We are simply allowing users to post what products and services they like. By having users share and engage in conversations with their friends regarding the products/services they "like" will help them receive coupons and/or prizes. When purchasing a product, I personally tend to buy something that my friend(s) recommend opposed to a company advertising it. This is great because if your friends are genuinely interested, they will spread the word and there is no better marketing than word of mouth!

It's a win-win for both users and vendors as they both have incentives. There may be some skepticism since there has never been a site out like LikeBids, however I can see many people proactively sharing items with their friends they find great interest in.

I think my personal reaction to it is definitely going to depend heavily on how it ends up being presented. If it's obtrusive it's going to annoy people like me, but if it's unobtrusive it won't work. Ohhhh, the paradox of advertising.

For instance, when I was writing my reply above, I was sitting in the lounge (college dorm) with a few of my friends (sophomores). We discussed the idea briefly, and none of us really liked the concept (pun would be clever if intended) that's in play here. The content of our discussion is pretty well summarized in my post above.

I think if you play your cards right, you've got a great concept on your hands. I just hope this new social networking boom isn't a bubble that's going to pop just like the tech bubble in the 90's.

In my opinion advertising like this will soon fall to the wayside. People are getting tired of tricks, gimmicks, and floods. Like said, when I see this I block it immediately. People are getting hammered by advertising on the internet, TV, radio, and even in public. More and more people are putting up personal walls to defend this.

I think the key to good advertising is to make it entertaining, and honest.

Edit: Jumping through hoops to sign up, and spamming my friends for a prize is not a positive experience to me.
