i don't have a bluray player
but is it possible to connect a laptop (through HDMI?) to the TV and watch a bluray rip on the LCD TV?

i think i can use the tv as a pc screen

Sure, you can connect an HDTV as an external monitor thru HDMI, I've done it with my laptop.  Your video card may only support up to about 720P, though.

oh, (yeah, double post!! i shall receive an instant permaban!)

does anybody know of a laptop capable of an HDMI connection that displays images at a full 1080p resolution?

CHEAPEST laptop available, just to watch movies (no Dell, no HP please)

Wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy a blu-ray player?

I'm trying to figure a way to get ripped bluray movies to be watched on the new lcd screen.

BR players are really, REALLY expensive here, and even the thought of renting a BR disc (which obviously i can't copy/pirate because i don't have a bluray player or a hybrid BR+DVD-RW player in my PC) is ridiculous,

a regular sony BR player is almost $2500.00 here (that's about U$S800.00) and renting a BR movie is (on average) $80.00, which is about U$S20.00

not cool at all :p

if i can get myself a cheap 1080p output laptop then i'd be able to transfer blu-rips into it so i could watch them comfortably on the new TV :)

I have a Dell M1330 that does it just fine, even at 1920x1080 if you want to.

Now I know you didn't want a dell, but anything with the same video chipset (geforce 8400 or newer) would suffice work for you.

I don't know how much that laptop is.

OH

And I found out I can just connect a PC thru a dvi/vga (rgb) connector, NO HDMI NEEDED!

Why do I know this?
I'm writing this post while sitting at 2 metres looking at a bigass 46" screen :p.....yeah, it took me a while to disconnect EVERYTHING I had connected to my desktop pc, but it was hell worth it. 720p and 1080p blurips are AWESOME, no need for true bluray movies :D

So any laptop that can handle a VGA connector and process a 720p or 1080p movie is great!

Our LCD projector has a sticker on the front saying "high definition", and a HDMI plug on the back. Not sure how high definition is is tho, I dont have anything high-def in the house.
