When I was much younger I purchased jewelry for the women in my life. Lots of gold, diamonds and precious gems. But, when they turned into selfish b1tche$, it occurred to me that gifts are gifts and I quit doing it. I may have about an ounce of gold left, but it is put away and I never take it out any longer.

I made this pen stand from a raw piece of wood, stained it, for my daughter on her 16th birthday, she was our millennium baby.
Found these beautiful US gold coins from the year she was born and I embedded them into the pen stand along with the gold Fountain and Ballpoint Parker Pens.
Hope you don't mind me sharing, but I love gold things :crackup:

So your daughter was born in 2000, Andrew? Are those 1 ounce USA gold coins? Most people would try to keep them enclosed in an hermetically seal cases to hold their collection value. In 50 years or more they could be worth more than their weight in gold. I do get the jewelry aspect of gold though. My daughter is 33 years old and she hates jewelry and won't wear it, so I can't do anything like that for her. I have given her coins of value as she will accept that, at least. Last time she had a present coming, I just gave her cash. I hate doing that as it is so impersonal, but she couldn't give me an idea of something she might like.

Paul yes, my daughter was born in 2000.
She's our sixth child, we have eight children, 3 boys and 5 girls.
Hehehe, I wish the coins were 1 ounce solid gold but they're not they're only 1 oz .999 Silver American Eagle U.S. Coin but just 24KT Gold Plated, only worth $25 USD.
They look good though.
I actually did also buy her a solid gold American Eagle from the year 2000 but it was only 1/10 oz, as a memento, in a hermetically sealed case but it's very small.
I know what you mean though, they are hard to buy gifts for since she doesn't wear much jewellery, she's more into guns.
She likes shotguns, she likes to shoot a .410 shotie and her brothers want to buy her a .308 when she's a bit older.

It probably varies around the world, but here 'investment gold' is vat-exempt, while jewely as a 21% vat slapped on. Investment gold are things like bars or nearly pure gold coins that have to collectors value at all. If you set a coin like that in the ring, pendant or such the whole thing will become a jewel and be subject to VAT, pricing it out of the gold value instantly.

Obviously I didn't buy it for an investment!
As I said before it's the design I'm paying for!
If I wanted an investment I would have bought in my own country and there is plenty cheap gold priced by weight in pawn shops if I just wanted a plain gold ring, I thought its obvious I was looking to buy a custom design!

There is over 1/2 an ounce of gold in the ring. An ounce is 28 grams Never mind gold content, 15.5 grams in the ring! Witch is more than half an ounce, This nugget coin design isn't available in Australia, And I was happy to pay extra for a mind blowing design!

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, gold is weighed in troy ounces which have 31.1035 grams. And gold content is the karat weight divided by 24. So, a troy ounce of 14K gold is 58.33% pure gold. Or the gold content is .583 troy ounces which is 18.133 grams of gold.

Once again there is 14 grams of 14k. And 1.55 grams of 24k. Not bad at all for a ring!
