Hey guys!
It's winter time here in the United States and usually I plan a winter trip.
For 5 weeks spanning from February 20th to march 26 I'll be visiting three countries.
First -Brisbane Australia, couple weeks in this area.
Second- I'll be taking a round trip to Papua New Guinea. (Be there roughy a week)
Third I fly to Tokyo Japan March 16-26th

Most of my trip I'll be staying in hostels carrying just a backpack.
I like to see and do things off the beaten path. Less lonely planet type travel. I'm always open for adventure so any advice from the locals or people who have traveled here would be greatly appreciated.

Any electronics I could get in Japan that wouldn't be available here?
What are the chances I could smuggle a laser into Australia without getting deported upon arrival?

Thanks
Jefferson

-the chance of you smuggle a laser into Australia is 0%...Custom is very strict here. Any sharp object or anything resemble a weapon, if you are bringing medication you better bring prescription as well. and it's summer in Australia right now and it's really hot. you can visit an Aboriginal tribe and learn a whole bunch of things about them.

-You can pay N!ch!a head quarter a visit and get us some diodes...when you visit Japan.

As FUBeaches said, Customs are very strict here.
But in case you do smuggle any in, bring one in for me as well.

While you're downunder please take the time to take in the night sky, you'll be amazed, just make sure you're away from any light polluted cities.

Hope you have a great time Jefferson.

Regards

Roger that on the lasers, I don't plan on bringing any.
Thanks for the heads up on the others items. Diodes would be great, I've always wanted to see diodes roll off an assembly line. Maybe I'll met someone who knows where to buy diodes Without getting ripped off.

RB astro, you nailed it. I'd love to see things in the Southern Hemisphere that I don't get to see in the northern hemisphere.
Example the Large Magellanic Cloud would be nice to see.
A local astronomy event would be a great experience.

You should see if you can go visit Fiddy. His house is basically a giant collection of awesome stuff. I think you'd really dig what he has going on.

Sounds like a great trip - especially PNG.

I spent some time on the indonesian end of papua last year, and that was certainly worth the effort to visit it. If you have the time i recommend going over to the indonesian side, though this would probably require arranging visa in advance.

I'm off to indonesia myself tomorrow - pretty long trip from holland but always a good experience. I'll be back here before you leave, but if you want to sidetrack in indonesia let me know :)

Yea, I might shoot Fiddy a PM. He might have some valuable insight on a few places. Maybe see what he has set up.

Paupa New Guinea is going to be rough but I am a season traveler(knock on wood). This type experience is what I'm looking for. I've contacted a few organizations about using some of my skill sets to help. Quality weld work or minor engineering. Visiting English schools. Things I have done in the past.

Japan I will be traveling with a girl I met in Brazil/Hawaii. This will be a group thing at this point.
Ben, is this for work or vacation? Indonesia would be interesting. Tell me more about the nature of your visit.
Visas, being a US citizen I am ok to go to Japan without one, same with PNG, Australia I filled out an application online and received a conformation #.

Bump bump.

Aussie friends, I'm flying into Brisbane. Where are some unique/less crowded towns I could stay in and experience the beach?
I've been recommended Townsville & magnetic island.
Ps I also travel with a small folding pocket knife. Is this something they will confiscate upon arrival?

Wow you're leaving so soon? Was hoping I'd get to see you finish the TC before being off for months.

Re: knife. If they give you trouble just give them a reverse of the old Croc Dundee quote. =P

Aww Brisbane...... if you stay long enough you should pay Queensland a visit( famous for the Great Barrier Reef). There's also the Penguin parade on Philip Island. There's always a beach somewhere no matter which city you're in..

Haha yes, it's a small knife. No Rambo blades. Thanks for the heads up on the beaches. Looks like I'll be spending only a week near Brisbane then up to PNG for 10 more days. Not nearly enough time if you ask me.

I hope I can finish that TC. I leave feb 22nd so I have roughy another month.
Thanks fellas

Welllll, that was a haul. reboot and back to reality.
-Australia was awesome dispite the sun burn, never again will I be too cool for sun block.
Favorite place : Alice springs, the desert was awesome.
-Papua New Guinea- welcome to the zoo. Left port moresby for the eastern highlands. Landed on a dirt runway and taught a national how to weld aluminum.

Japan was pretty crazy too. I went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Fuji. Electric town was cool in Tokyo. Of course I traveled with three vegetarian Brazillan woman so I involuntarily saw my fare share of shopping & entertainment.

I'm glad to be back and sifting through the forum again!
Have I missed anything exciting in the past six week? No new diodes?
