alright. so i did a bunch of searching and nothing i found seemed to do me right. i was watching ironman and started wondering the workings of the arc reactor. the concept of it is just a power source to power the electro-magnet in the cavity to keep the shards of metal out of his heart. being a multibillionare, why didn't he just have surgery to remove the shrapnel with the best team of surgeons after he got back to America? who knows.

but anyways, the copper wire wrapped around the glass is not decoration, it should be an electro-magnet to keep the plasma inside the glass thing stable. right? as for the reaction, it has to be some element reacting with the palladium ring he made from the nuke heads, right? i know that palladium falls into the platinum metals group and that platinum is a common fill in mufflers reacting and bonding with the hydrogen. thus palladium must react with hydrogen and store it, isn't there some way to do something with palladium and hydrogen to create an electric current?

anyone have insight and/or corrections?

Um.. you're asking about the rational behind a prop in a movie that was released 4 years ago?

Man get a hobby, go outside, go fishing, take a walk, ect. You really need to find something to do.

It's just a plot device, many movies have them. There is no serious thinking behind it. Iron Man is pretty awesome though.

first I would like to say that sci fi has always led the way for new technology what stark made in the movie was a working small scale Tokamak reactor or magnetic plasma confinement ring to produce energy.

I looked up that reactor. In theory yes that's what's going on but I think there has to be some other kind of reaction going on in the movies. Otherwise he would have to have a perfect magnetic field to contain the plasma...and...he would burst into flames anyways. But that seems ligit so far. Still noone familiar with chemistry? Palladium and hydrogen anyone?
