Well, I can't say that NJ has the most advanced technology... although it wouldn't surprise me in the least considering that NJ has some of the best funded police departments around.

Bottom line is in ALL cops that I've come across, use guns where they actually target cars specifically. The old school detectors that are just left on... only place I see them is in signs.

Which brings me to another issue which may be more area specific. Radar detectors around here give off false alerts like crazy. I have friends who still use them... when they get to north jersey they just turn them off... witht he false alerts you may as well assume there is a cop around every turn and bend.

So while I can't speak for the middle of bumble f*ck nowhere in the heartland (no offense intended, I love to visit, I'd hate to stay) I can tell you from ten years of driving that radar detectors around where I live are useless.

Ya I have noticed that I get 4 times as much false alerts here than in Iowa. But Iowa was small and clearwater is a huge city. Most of the false alerts arent really false alerts, they are the hundreds of speed signs in Florida. They are so annoying. But I have already been saved once the first week I was here I couldnt resist cruising at 90 on the highway. It was the sun that made me do it.

Cop was right around the bend, thank god it wasn't laser.

I dunno...years ago when I was young and only needed a car for cruising I had a radar detector. Old school type. mind you, with the probe part detector that had to be mounted externally and the controller inside. It took me a while to figure out that some building's active alarm systems were triggering it. A funeral home in particular would flood the streets for 2 blocks in all directions. Once I figured out the alarms that did it I realized that the cops could NEVER use their radar there either for the same reason. Free range speed zones !
Now modern radar is less affected by this problem but the nature of the waves emitted always allows reflections/deflections to "advertise" their presence so it still can be useful to have a detector if you find the need. A lot of time the cops just use it more as a method of causing the traffic to slow down in an area of concern more than actually targeting the drivers. Think of it as portable traffic slowing measures. The radio stations here include speed traps in their traffic reports. Most of them are phoned in by the cops doing it themselves. Follow the reports for a few days and you start to see a pattern of locations that repeats indicating that they are trying to teach drivers to slow down in certain areas.
Now the laser is a very significantly targeted and focused single vehicle tracking beam. There is no doubt about where it is reading and that it is only reading that point. The frequencies and pureness of signal makes it exponentially better at doing the job. It also requires much less power, is less wasteful, and is far safer for both the operator and target when used. This results in an almost instantaneous reading with high accuracy. The perfect tool for picking off those guilty of speeding.
Yep, a laser detector is nothing more than an indicator of an impending ticket. So you can tense up and get anxious about being even later than you were expecting.
Although, around here at least, the laser detectors are usually only used in places that are notorious for excessive and dangerous speeding. Places that have a higher incidence of racing or a hidden corner or other hazard that leads to more deaths than average for that area. That's usually where you can expect a "zero tolerance" from them and they pick random times to pick off ANYONE pushing even a little over the limits.
It can seem a bit ridiculous at first, but after some further investigation you frequently can determine the reasons for it and it can lessen the blow of the penalties to you.

And it will teach you important lessons that allow you to get old and experienced. Then you will know when and how to speed. But you won't feel like it nearly as much.
Besides it's even more embarrassing to get pulled over in a "family" vehicle with baby seat an' all. The cops love to rub it in then...

I can Imagine, its also embarassing when you dont have time to hide your detector and you forget to turn it off, then right when he steps up to the window it starts giving a very loud radar alert.

Just go to court, I didn't read the whole thread just a few posts, but here's a few things :

Go to court, most courts now HAVE to give you 365 days to pay your fine before they issue a bench warrant. $1,000 in court fees? Court fees will not be more than $200 + your ticket($400)

And you will have 1 year to pay it, you will not win over that cop do just accept what you did and go deal with it.

You people have proven that you can think logically and reason through an argument.

Unfortunately, you have failed to acknowledge that laws are not based on logic or reason, and the courts are about upholding the law, not logic or reason. That's supposedly the schools' job.

And have you fitted laser guided rockets to your car, triggered by the laser detector for the next event, to make it a non event as a rocket roars off and zero's in on the cop with the laser gun?

Years ago there were plans available for building your own radar jammer. A device that you installed in your vehicle that when triggered by your detector would transmit a overpowering signal back to the source that would cause the reader to "see" the speed at which you set your transmitter to send. (So even if you were doing 120 your transmitter would be set to broadcast 50. When a cop aims his radar at you and triggers your detector it would turn on your transmitter and he gets a signal back of either 50 or else he gets an error code.)
You want to talk about illegal devices on your car...even in places where having a detector isn't illegal having a transmitter sure is !
And then there was the problem with cooking anything in front of your transmitter accidentally when triggered by false alarms and such. You see, you used what ammounts to a directional microwave emitter assembly tucked under the hood and just hidden by the grill. Forget it's on while in front of the car waxing the hood and you could microwave your family jewels. Ouch !
I haven't seen anything out there about building a laser jammer or over-ride system.
Do you think it would be possible ?
It shouldn't be hard to find out the details used by the police units and replicate them in an automotive preset version. I'm thinking they are likely IR aren't they ? As having any sort of visible beam laser would be too hazardous to aim into traffic.
So building a diffused pulse controlled emitter(s) in the front and back of the car should be possible. If it doesn't over-ride the initial signal it might at least make it unreliable. (If it becomes additive then the reading would indicate more than double the speed travelled which the officer would clearly realize isn't what is happening. He would have to assume that the reading was a glitch or error and let you keep going as he wouldn't have the proof to support a summons.(ticket) Your honour, it showed he was going 110 mph in a 50 zone. I didn't know 20 year old Mazdas could go that fast.

PLEASE be clear about this - I am not suggesting that I or anyone else build anything that allows you to flagrantly break the laws. I am just contemplating the theoretical concepts of the devices involved to foster a better understanding of everything involved. The science and math would be a good mental exercise. If anyone is dumb enough to try to build something like what is discussed you should be aware that it WILL result in severe penalties from the authorities when they discover your build.
And they WILL discover it. Anyone who finds it necessary to apply this theory will surely become recognizable in their vehicle fast enough that you will only manage to put off the eventual consequences for a short time and then it will cost you much more !
And that isn't even taking into account the unseen and unseeable potential dangers from the possible components. (Think of a multi watt laser that you can't see blasting at your eyes from a passing car. The high revving engine causes you to look at it as it comes near then your vision starts to blur and you "feel" a sort of popping in your eyes...)
So don't do it !

Now if you need to pass through a war zone the military might be interested in a version of this...

Laser guns are just a modified version of a LIDAR. There are already products out there that are highly illegal which can jam them. There are also radar detector detectors that the cops can use to check if your using a RD, and radar detector detector... detectors that can check before the cop gets near if he is using a radar detector detector and will shut off the LO (which is what the RDD is listening for) in your radar detector to stop you being.... detected! *phew!*

My idea with the rockets would be much more fun. "Eliminating radar/laser traps. For good. One at a time!"

Thats a really intresting idea, I would want to build it just to test it out.

Just kidding I dont want to spend some time in jail. I wonder if it would work.

oh ya, I peeled out of the Walmart parking lot today after getting some shopping :eg: Little did I know that the ford explorer behind me was a undercover cop. He was a nice guy, we had a great conversation and he let me leave.

Im thinking about getting a sports bike, but I would probably get a ticket everyday. My friend got a "one or more wheels of the ground " ticket 2 days ago. Here in Florida they are really harsh with that, he was on the highway and not wearing a helmet so the officer of course gave him the ticket which costs minimum $1150. I guess he deserves it, but I feel bad for him.

EDIT: Im sitting with him now, and its his second offense so it's $2500 and I think his license is getting suspended for 5 years. FML 5 years of giving him rides. :gun:

Dont even ask about what happens if you get a 3d offense... Lets just say you are looking at $10k+, jail time, and 10+ year license suspension. You could commit crimes like a robbery and get off the hook easier

On a side note... undercover cop cars are for the most part very obvious.

Tinted front windows... possibly a cop.
Lights behind the grill... 99% a cop.
Sun visors down and reflective to the outside... cop.
American made car, ford or chevy... COP.

And of course the classic... a crown vic with dual exhaust, painted a dark color. Guess what. It's a COP!

radar detectors are useless. When cops want to catch you, they just turn it on to clock you, and by the time your detector picks it up, it's too late.

Last time I got pulled over, I was going 70 in a 55. I got it dropped to 59 in a 55, and still ended up paying the fine AND lawyer fees. This was to avoid losing my license for 30 days.

I now only speed 5mph over the limit, as 99.9% of law enforcement aren't going to bother pulling you over for that.

Depends on the location I suppose, but around here, most cops won't bother with you unless you're more than 10mph over the limit, or you happen to be in a school zone. Last possibility is if they spot you with a cell phone... in that case you're fair game as far as they are concerned.

the cell phone law only applies to persons under 21 here

I only watch the road 30% of the time. the other 70% is messing with the radio and texting on my cell phone.
